Corsair Neutron Series GTX vs Samsung 840 Pro

Hi I am trying to buy a SSD and finally came down to these two. Which SSD is the best performance wise?

Benchmarks would indicate Samsung 840 Pro. That said, I do not think you will ever see a real life day-2-day difference in performance.

Bottom Line: I do prefer the Samsung 840 Pro.
Reason is 1) prefer the controller, I think the controller for the Corsair is a SF22xx - much prefer the marvel and samsung controllers. Track record for Samsung in the area of reliability/Least user problems is VERY good, And this is what I consider Much more important than looking @ benchmark results.

Have 3 Crucial M4's, 3 Samsung 830's, 1 Samsung 840 Pro, and 2 Agility IIIs (My mistake).
Have a number of older sata II SSDs, dating back to Intels G1.

The Corsair Neuton GTX has a new controller it is not a Sandforce 22xx. It is an LAMD controller.

- You're correct I remember reading that but had forgotten.

The only issue I would have, is I tend NOT to recommend "New" /Redesigned SSD for at least 6 Months after release. Reason is simple, hate to be a beta bug tester. Cases in point.
.. Intel even with their great reputation as had some problems that USERS found out. Mainly their 5 mb bug that bricked the SSD. Fix only took a couple of weeks if I remember correctly.
.. Crucial M4, which I highly recommend, with their 5000 Hour bug. Fixed with firmware update quickly, but again it was users that identified this.
.. OCZ Agility and Vertex III and New Sandforce controller. Considerable Compatability problems. OCZ blamed Users and their systems (Dah), and took considerable time to fix - about 8 Monthes. YES I bought 2 120 gig Agillity III when they first came out. One No problem, Other one would NOT work as an OS + Program drive in my Laptop - The M4 worked without a hitch.

The fact that there is almost NO real life difference in real life performance is the reason I: 1) Recommend one with a proven track record of Least user problems, and 2 Tend to shy away from NEW releases.

On Performance, synthetic Benchmarks can highlight performance diff but rarely tansfer to a real life performance difference. Case in Point using MY Curcial M4, Samsung 830 and a New Samsung 840 Pro (all three are 256 Gig Units). Using AS SSD (ATTO is a HDD benchechmark that is about the worst to use for SSDs) my M4 and the 830 both get a overall score of Mid 700's - the Samsung 840 Pro overall score is a WHOOPING 1100, almost 50% higher than the M4 and 830. This DID NOT correlate to a real noticable improvement. The 840 Pro shortend boot time by upto 2 sec, and Since my eyeballs are not calibrated down to 5 milliSec NO diff for program load times.

Samsung 840 Pro> Corsair Neutron GTX > Samsung 840 in terms of performance.I don't know much about reliability of the Corsair SSD. It uses LAMD controller which is newer than sandforce. So I have no idea. I'll have to wait until my drive dies

Correct ^ but the GTX only has a very small lead over the 840, whereas it's a fair bit behind the 840 Pro. At least in benchmarks. Like Chief says, real world performance shows so little variance that reliability and capacity are good ways to make a purchase decision. SSDs are meant to be rock-solid reliable but in practice that clearly isn't always the case. Still a relatively new technology so maybe you could argue kinks still need working out. That said, Samsung don't seem to have any problems in that regard...

If that's the case, what do you think about the sandisk ultra plus SSDs recently released? I saw toms full review of them and they seem to be a good value for what they are targeting.

I have been wondering exactly that. Far as I know, Sandisk's previous SSD experience has been pure Sandforce. Which maybe puts them at a bit of a disadvantage. They're generally very experienced of course in various flash memory products. Would be great if there was some resource for comparing failure rates or even just complaint rates of various brands/products.

First off I have some 15 SSDs oldest dating back to the Intel G1 and G2. Oldest Sata III drives 2 Agillity IIIs, M4 and a Samsung 830 were purchased early->mid 2011. I have YET to note a real performance decrease and have not had one failure.

Not the most reliable source, but better than nothing, is Newegg user reviews.
1) Only look at reviews if >30.
2) Most users that rate themselves as HIGH are NOT.
3) A good percentage of DOA, and “died in 3 Months” are User caused. It is estimated that approx 30 percent of electronic subsystems DOA and died in 3 Months (referred to as walking wounded) are due to ESD damage. NOTE this applies EQUALLY to all brands!
4) With SSDs that have been around for a while and have several hundred user reviews, compare overall vs last 3 or 6 months for trend. May show improvement, but may also show a decline.
5) Manuf sometimes make a small modification so that the part number changes to mask problems. Ie model X, part number shows high complaints, so manuf replaces a component (NO Change in reliability) and changes the part number, still model X, but different part number. Old part number and problem disappears and new one shows up with small number of reviews.
6) Poor performance – generally I ignore – almost all of these are user related

As I’ve indicated my first choice is the Samsung 840 Pro. Followed by Plextor M5P and Crucial M4 then Samsung 840 non-Pro..
But if I’d limited my choice to M4 vs Sandisk, I’d probably would go with the M4.

NO! While I did indicate that that happens - Not the case on the M4, But some manufs do play that game. Way to tell is if say two drives are BOTH retail, or BOTH OEM with identical specs, just dfferent model numbers. nother indicator is if a model has been available for a say 1 to
Should have stated that, and in this case you could probably just add all together.

On M4
Only real diff is 3 are 9.5 mm and one is a 7mm (for newer ultrabook laptops). Of the 3 that are 9.5 mm, The drives are probably identical, one being with a transfer kit, of the other two, one is OEM, and one is retail (does not look like they tried to hide a problem - if that was the case the worst one (798 reviews) would have been listed as discontinued and NOT shown up Would have to spefically typed in the model number to find it.

OK gotcha Do the specs vary slightly on the 7mm? I seem to recall a while ago the m4 suddenly became a much faster option (in benchmarks anyway). May have just been a firmware update though.
