I lost the stock power cord for my corsair power supply, but i found a cord that looks quite similar that i use for a guitar amplifier. Is it a bad idea to use this cord or will it damage m power supply and computer?

Solution

Yep, that will be fine. Sorry for the roundabout procedure, but I...
If it is the type used on computers and monitors, then no, and no, they are all the same.

They have a distinct shape, and will only plug into a power supply or monitor.

Some laptop, and printer bricks use the same cords.

This is assuming Noth America.

Not true, low amperage components get low amperage cables. A guitar amplifier would not need a high amperage cable, and if he used it with a 1500W PSU running at full load, it could be a considerable fire risk. Thus my original question.

I just checked my 24 spare power cords, and they are all 18 gauge, which to my knowledge is the Ul requirement for flexible power cords. even the skinniest ones are 18guage.

A 50' 18 gauge cord can safely carry 1625 watts, a 6 foot cord can carry even more.

Just check the wire gauge.

Chances are he'll be fine, but I'd prefer to check before he burns his house down. Remember, just because a cord can carry 15A, doesn't mean it can do it continuously.

I agree, I highly doubt that he's using a 1500W PSU anyway, but better safe than sorry.

My PSU is a CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V, does that mean it isn't a fire hazard, The cord matches with my PSU and comes from a fender amp. Also thanks alot for the the answers.

Any chance you can take a photo of it? That would be the easiest way to check.

And the cable (sorry for poor quality, i checked that it does match my PSU prongs)

Yep, that will be fine. Sorry for the roundabout procedure, but I didn't want you to burn your house down.
