I have Dell e-510 with dual memory. currently two 512 and two 256. Can I add a 1gb in slot 1 and remove one 256 and still work?

Well, mixing timings isn't ideal, but it should run ok. The motherboard will probably default timings to the higher latency.

Yeah, U can install it, but will not run in dual channel, the dual channel needs that the amount of RAM on both stick be the same.

You need to make sure your Dell system can provide the proper voltage for the memory you are adding. If it cannot provide the proper voltage, then you will not be able to use this memory.
