Question corsair sp120 rgb fans

I'm planning on building a new pc with a msi b450 tomahawk and the corsair sp120 rgb fans. I'm getting the three pack witch comes with an rgb controller included but I was wondering if I am able to plug the fans into the rgb headers on the motherboard to make use of mystic light sync. Would this be possible or will i have to just use the controller?
