Corsair vengeance 2x4gb cant get up to 1600mhz

Yo,
i have a corsair vengeance 2x4gb 1600mhz, fx-8120 @ 3.8ghz (19x200) and 990fxa-ud3 gigabyte mobo...

I cant get my ram to 1600mhz, its at 1333 and when i change to 1600 it says bad voltage on bootup and changes back.
Ive tried manually and via. profiles, whatsup ?

Run memtest on each stick one at a time; most have lifetime warranties.

do you think they are faulty ? i dont have any other problems with them...

how do i run memtest tho ?

Memtest is a free download; one of my boards came with it in the bios settings. Just remove one of sticks and run it for a few minutes; usually, you'll get errors right away if the ram is bad. Use the default ram setting on the motherboard. I just set mine to auto.

"Bad voltage?" Dumb question but did you make sure the voltage of the ram is set to whatever it is suppose to be?

example: Ram is suppose to be at 1.65 but you got it at 1.5.

yeah even if i do it manually, i can set my ram to 1600mhz and voltage to 1.5 and it still says bad voltage and clocks it back down to 1333

In order to acheive the 'Rated' DDR3-1600 speed you need to fully set the DRAM Frequency, CAS Timings (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS) and Command Rate (1N/2N), and the DRAM Voltage all per Rated spec.

I can see you have: FX-8120 and GA-990FXA-UD3, but I don't know which set of Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3-1600.

Example (change CAS Timings per spec) - 2x4GB DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24-2N @ 1.50v; some kits are 8-8-8-24-2N, 8-9-8-24-2N, or 7-8-8-24-2N. So look your kit up or look at CPU-z (SPD) and the XMP-1600 listed profile information and substitute the correct values below:

DIMM Installation:
CPU: | blank | 4GB | blank | 4GB | ; I prefer this arrangement
or
CPU: | 4GB | blank | 4GB | blank |

BIOS:
F7 ; Loads Optimized Defaults
Set Memory Clock -> 8 ; 8*200MHz(FSB) = 1600MHz
DRAM Configuration /Enter
DDR3 Timing Items -> Manual
1T/2T Command Timing -> 2T ; 2N = 2T = 2
CAS# latency -> 9 ; per your kit
RAS to CAS R/W Delay -> 9 ; per your kit
Row Precharge Time -> 9 ; per your kit
Minimum RAS Active Time -> 24; per your kit

DRAM Voltage Control -> 1.50v~1.55v ; use 1.55v if you have any issues or Memtest fails
F10 ; Save & Exit = Yes

Next, test the RAM with Memtest86+ (ISO/Zip) to create a bootable CD/DVD and test for at least 4 Passes. Link - http://www.memtest.org/

so what settings should i put with these to acheve 1600mhz ?

Follow the directions I posted above, and the CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 is DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24-2N @ 1.50v kit i.e. exactly as I posted so no need for changes.

Start with making certain the RAM is installed in the proper DIMM slots (see DIMM Installation: ) and then modify the BIOS settings exactly as posted above (see BIOS: ).

ok i did exactly as you said, but its still 1333mhz (it did post without voltage warning tho)...

You're looking at the wrong info; instead of 'SPD' look at 'Memory'; the screen is the encoded and available Frequency/CAS/Voltage. Use CPU-z and look at the 'Memory' tab as shown below, that's what is actually running. DRAM Frequency = 800MHz * 2 = 1600MHz (DDR3 = Double Data Rate revision 3).

Here's an example of 32GB in Quad Cahnnel running DDR3-1600 CAS 9-9-9-24-2N:

IF you had prior startup failures @ 1.50 then IMO leave it. Until you run 4-passes of Memtest you don't even know if it's stable or not. RAM has a tolerance of ±0.2v~±0.30v and the MOBO between load and idle can bounce the DRAM Voltage ±0.1v all on it's own.
