I have a cougar HOTAS I bought when they first came out but it has never
been out of the box until I just bought F4AF and decided to set it up.
Installed software, updated firmware, installed latest software. Everthing
checks out except the throttle doesn't respond. All the buttons on both
controls work except the throttle. WinXP Pro sp2, directx9.0c. Tried various
modes and mapping files in Foxy but the throttle still doesn't respond. Is
the throttle supposed to make loud double clicks as you advance it?

There is a lot of good info available at Cougar World.

I would start by uninstalling the software, clearing the firmware, and
starting with a fresh install.
I would disconnect the throttle when you flash, there have been issues in
the past with throttle pots going bad while flashing if connected.

Is your throttle recognized in Foxy's windows joystick analyzer in directx
mode?

If the above doesn't help, you might try posting in the forums there at
Cougar World, lot of knowledgeable Cougar owners there that can offer
assistance as well.

Hope this helps,

Mine clicks when you pass the throttle indents in the movement arc, this is
normal. did you have the throttle connected to the stick before plugging in
the usb to the pc? Did you use the game controllers part in the windows
control panel before running the CCP? I installed mine as follows: plug
stick and throttle together
install Cougar Control Panel
plug in usb of Cougar to your PC
Windows will then install drivers for Human Interface Device
(In) and HID (out)
Run CCP and manually calibrate
Install Foxy

I called Thrustmaster. They determined the Throttle potentiometer is bad and
are sending me a new one. They said it is because I had it unused in a box
for so many years. Could have been my flashing the firmware too I guess but
I thought I had the Throttle unplugged. Anyway, my wait time calling
Thrustmaster was about 15 seconds and the part is free. I hear negative
stuff about their support but they have always been way above average the
few times I have had to contact them. I have had a TM stick since they
started back when the first version of Falcon was on my 50Mhz , Windows 3,
machine. What year did Falcon come out originally?? Must have been ten years
ago at least.

Good to hear.

Hopefully, they will indeed get that pot sent out to you quickly. I know
their service in years past was awesome, however more so lately it has not
been quite what it used to be.
In the meantime, read up at Cougar World and the manual, and get ready to
enjoy a truly incredible hotas setup!!

I also have been flying TM sticks for some time, matter of fact, I still
have the F16 FLCS/tqs setup that I modified with Bob Church's digital chips,
sitting on the shelf in the closet.

Keep us posted on your progress,

No, I meant the first Falcon. I got it when it first came out. I think it
was just called Falcon. I still have it somewhere. It came on 4 or 5
floppies and then there was an upgrade to "Falcon Tiger" or something like
that, then Falcon3. Had to be about 1994. There was a compuserve forum where
you could post screenshots and video. The flight model was really easy and
had some holes in it, like there was a competition to see who could get
their plane the highest. You could get it up to 200,000 or 300,000 feet.

Yes I think that was in 1988 or 1989 perhaps earlier. Falcon 3.0
came out in 1991. The glory days of Spectrum Holobyte. Before
the dark times.

Dale, don't wanna dissapoint but don't wait for TM to send you a pot. They
might say they are gonna send a pot but you getting it is another story.
There are various threaths about that on the Frugals Cougarworld forum (the
best source and info for anything related to the Cougar).
Those that are telling you that a pot can go dead because you didn't use the
throttle since you bought it are pulling your leg (or don't know what they
are talking about). BTW, how can they define, over the phone, that your pot
is dead without even looking at it, not saying not even measuring it?
You could been suffering a dead pot if you flashed it with the throttle
connected (i say "could" because i never disconnected my throttle while
flashing and my throttle pot was still superb when replced it by a Hall
sensor. And i asure you that i flashed a lot in the beginning).

My sugestion: Head over to the Cougarworld forums:
http://forums.frugalsworld.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=8 and look for some
info and start trying this to define if your pot is realy dead or not, just
don't wait on TM's pot, you could wait forever...

I'm fairly certain it was for Falcon 4. Before that it was a Spectrum
Holobyte show. As far as I can remember 🙂

I called them over a year ago with this exact same problem. They said the
would send me new pots. They never arrived and the stick sits in its box
on a shelf. I have lost interest.
