Could a DVD drive scratch the DVD disc?

I have an old but functional DVD drive, but I don't know if it's clean or not (inside the drive) Could it scratch a DVD disc? I have a valuable expensive DVD disc and would like to make a personal copy of it with the drive. I don't know if it would scratch or damage the disc if it's put into an old DVD drive

It is said that a DVD drive never touches the disc physically? Is that true?

It must touch the disk to make it spin.
It (normally) does not touch the data surface.

Try it with a crappy DVD. See what happens.
