Could an 850w PSU run this CPU (plus other components)?

I'm running an R9 290, 8gb RAM, and 1 HD (also running a disk drive, but can remove it).

Would an 850w PSU be able to also power an AMD FX 9370?

Thinking of upgrading.

Just from reading a little bit about this PSU brand I wouldn't have any high hopes for it. It seems like they sprouted up all of a sudden around 2010 and were pretty big about promoting their PSUs to the public. Of course their products probably don't meet most standards these days, not even meeting 80+ like you noticed.

That said, you'll probably be able to run your config fine, but if you upgrade like you're thinking of then who knows. The thing with low quality power supplies is that they run through "quality control" at much lower demands than the more reliable ones. So yeah you may be okay with that for a couple years, but then again maybe you got a particularly bad one. Safest bet is to save a couple dinners out and just buy a new one, otherwise you may be down the price of all the other hardware you have which would be a couple months dinners.

CIT power supplies are garbage, they are horribly overrated. That "850W" PSU is going to be more on par with 650W PSUs, but with horrendous efficiency, and passive PFC i wouldn't have high expectations for its voltage regulation or ripple suppression. It should be able to do the system you have listed, but i would definitely advise against over clocking at all.

I think we can all agree that a new PSU would be a good idea. If you want recommendations, XFX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply would be what I'd get.

That PSU only delivers 672W on the +12V rail (which most components use). The remaining 178W will be comprised of the other rails, which don't require anything like that kind of wattage.

You can do the calculation of ampere x voltage = wattage to get an idea of how much power a PSU truly delivers.
