Could I benefit from re-installing skyrim?

I have a heavily modded skyrim with 50 or so mods but have installed countless others in my time of having skyrim. I have uninstalled the unwanted mods on my game and now when I'm going through skyrim on a horse or foot (very fast pace) I have massive lag spikes whilst things load in and it happens very often throughout the world. I have started a new save and all now and am playing through that as my previous save was unplayable due to the amount of mods uninstalled, but I was wondering if uninstalling skyrim and reinstalling and then adding mods would improve performance?

Well, what types of mods do you use? Are you sure the mods don't conflict with each other? And did you check the "how to install/uninstall" on your mods, because some mods require a specific sort of installation/uninstallation so you don't mess up your game.

I've got a lot of different types of mods but the main ones that I uninstalled is graphics mods and I checked the uninstall precdure for most of em but when I was first finding out about modding I downloaded quite a few mods that were useless so I'm thinking that all of those old saves and data files may be causing a slowdown would that be possible?

I mean if the reinstall won't bother you, you could go ahead and do it. But did you try running BOSS or LOOT, just to check the load order and see if there are any errors?

Yeah I've ran loot and it said that there was no errors, do you think it's worth reinstalling? I've heard that you can never clear uninstalled mods and save dates completely so that's what got me thinking about it. I've uninstalled quite a few mods that could affect loading new areas and it's running better than before so that's good

If you are not using Mod Manager I highly recommend you delete all of your mods, even though its going to be a pain in the butt. A lot of the time there are leftover mod files and plugins etc etc from old mods that you uninstalled and that is what causes it to lag. It's very hard to figure out which files belong to currently installed mods and which are from old ones. And to delete your saves and configuration files just delete everything in this folder: My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/

thanks for the replies 🙂 yeah im using nexus mod manager, ive deleted all traces of skyrim apart from skse, nmm and files for the mods from nmm and i have moved these files into a backup folder for skyrim+ i deleted the saves aswell, should i go ahead and reinstall skyrim or is there anything else i need to do?

Well then you're set to reinstall. You can just uninstall from control panel and reinstall from steam or wherever you got it from

oh thats great then thanks 😀 so when skyrim is installed how will i activate my mods? do i just click on them through the backup folder i made (i copied the esp's and the esm's etc.)

You should just be able to install them all through mod manager. Mod manager keeps its own separate compressed copies of all of your mods so you don't need to backup the installed files/mods.

thanks for the help man 😀 ive just reinstalled and its running much better just one question though i started a brand new save and decided there was just one mod i didn't want and i uninstalled it (its a race mod to be half giant). i was just wondering would uninstalling mods, even small mods in mid save affect performance or anything of that matter?

It shouldn't affect anything, but don't uninstall mods when you don't absolutely have to, so you don't run in to the same problem twice
