Hi

I have Alienware 17 R5 i7-8750H... The default RAM was 16GB which I hoped would be single stick and I thought of purchasing another 16GB and upgrade to 32GB... But it came with 2 x 8GB :-(... Nevertheless I am looking to upgrade so I have decided to upgrade to 32GB... But I faced a peculiar issue, in dell website they have mentioned that Alienware 17 R5 models is not compatible with 2666MHz RAM modules (link below)...

As per this article my laptop is not compatible with 2666MHz, But when I bought on the website it was clearly mentioned my laptop can handle upto 2666MHz RAM, Already DELL has soft locked 32GB instead of 64GB and this too...

Experts please clarify this issue for me please... I am in dire need of upgrade

If any information is missing please ask and I will respond immediately

download and install the latest BIOS of your laptop from the Dell support homepage

supported module list:
https://www.dell.com/support/manual...d32a39-92c0-49ca-900d-2e51c535d7cb&lang=en-us

2x16GB 2666MHz should work if the BIOS can be updated
https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/alienware-17-r5/overview

According to Dell support site for my laptop
https://www.dell.com/support/home/i...1t98&oscode=wt64a&productcode=alienware-17-r5

They have mentioned that if my laptop bios update has a mention of "Improved memory compatibility for DDR4 2666Mhz memory DIMMS " under the enhancements information for the update, then my laptop still hasnt got solution for the issue... But when selling, if Dell says my laptop is 2666MHz compatible but then later say it isnt compatible until we update the bios following which they dont give an update, doesnt that constitute a lie?

I have travelling for the past 1.5 years quiet extensively away from my laptop due to which I did not realise this sooner, So now dell customer support says I am out of warranty so they cant support even my basic doubts... This is a breach of trust and blatant misinformation...

I had a look at the history of BIOS versions and since Version 1.1.6 (30 May 2018 ) the memory issue should have been solved.

And furthermore it´s no soft lock providing "only " 32GB, the motherboard only has 2 Dimm sockets, and can only handle 16GB per Dimm slot. If the laptop would have 4 Dimms slots, 64GB would have been possible.

I am not an expert hence I am here... But I have seen SODIMMS of 32GB capacity too... So 2 x 32GB SODIMMS should make 64...

Also regarding the BIOS update its clear that "Improved memory compatibility for Hynix 2667 MHz memory DIMMS. " isnt the same as "Improved memory compatibility for DDR4 2666Mhz memory DIMMS "...

Any particular reason you need 32 GB of RAM? 16 GB is plenty for most (including myself), and that is including the 2 VMs I am running on the PC all day long.

LOL I too completely agree with you... You might think its childish... Let me tell you why I need 32GB RAM, Its all because of one ah heck 'Cities: Skylines', Also add Tropico 6 to the list... These ram hungry games are restricting my gameplay to ridiculous extents that I have stopped playing those for almost 6 months... Sadly even 32 wouldnt be enough, But I am deciding to control myself...

Don´t bother my comment before, after thinking about it once more, you are right.

And because a Dell G5 15 5587 can use 64GB, it´s clear that a BIOS update is missing from Dell to make it work.
