Could I use 2 different GPUs in one PC?

Recently when I got back from PI I upgraded my old Radeon HD 7950 to a Radeon R9 290. Because of that my 7950 is kinda just sitting in a box. So I was curious if I could just add my 7950 into my build. I wasn't gonna crossfire it but just wanted to know if I could add it and it add any form of performance to my PC.

Nope unfortinantly that's not possible at the moment but in a few months when DirectX 12 optimized games come out they can utilize 2 different GPUs in a PC. meaning you could even use an GTX card with a Radeon card, but it will also allow users to crossfire an HD 7950 and an R9 290

btw is it a nice increase in performance going from the 7950 to a 290? since i wanna upgrade to an 290 aswell 😀

The 290 is about 50% faster than the 7950 at 1080p

Nope.
As said, future DX12 games may support mixing GPU's though I wouldn't hold your breath. It's added cost to the developer so I suspect it's going to happen but down the road when the code is easily done such as built more right into the game engine. That could be two years or more down the road, but nobody knows for sure.

Even then though it's going to add heat and noise so that may not be desirable.
