I was thinking that this would be a great way to mount custom OEM motherboards in standard ATX and mATX cases. Could mount a motherboard to a case using zip/cable ties? Has anybody tried it before? If so share with us how well it has worked.

Yea that was a silly mounting options xD . It will works though, but if the motherboard surface directly touch the case panel, then you will get a short-circuited motherboard. Some ATX/mATX motherboards include an external mounting bolt made of copper or whatever else, instead of bulged panel to mount your motherboard inside.

Only concern is see is if there is any vibrations they will act very differently when not firmly mounted and could harm some components after a while. But that is just a theory. If you do try this 1) still put the standoffs in the mb tray on the case. 2) place electrical tape or something similar on them so they can short the board wherever they make contact

But why though? Just mount it with the screws. If you're missing standoffs just order some. You can seriously damage your components if you mount it that way. Worst case scenario you can drill holes for standoffs. Just be careful they're alligned properly.
