Could we use RAM as storage?

Now with technology giving us the ability to have even 256gb of RAM and in the next coming years even more.

Will it ever be possible to replace traditional storage with insanely high speed RAM to make our computers faster?

Im talking in 5-20 years time

Solution
Currently RAM chips are volatile, meaning that they loose any data on them in a couple seconds of loosing power.
Thus no they can not be used for long term storage.

Current SSDs have limited read/writes. More then sufficient for needs as long term storage, but would go through the lifespan in a year or two as ram memory chips.

So we would have to create a whole new technology of memory before this could be a possibility.

Err you can already do it.

It involves buying a ram drive box.

Gigabyte's i-RAM drive was a good example, but the thing about ram memory is that it`s volatile Dan.
It means it always has to be powered to retain the data held in it.

And that required a box like the I-Ram drive that contained it`s own power source separate from the PC it was connected too, via a battery source.

Then the event of Nand flash came about and was favoured over the Ram drives.
And in 5 to 20 years from now Nand flash memory speeds will increase, be cheaper. and cost less per Gb of storage space.

Best bet is to buy as much ram as you can afford and install ram drive software. There are some good packages that will auto backup the ram drive in the event of power loss (GET A UPS??). The thing is, with SSHs and NVME SSDs available, we dont really need RAM drives. NVME is very fast. Not as fast as ram but I dont see RAM drives being justified with how fast NVME is.
