Could you pair a gtx 960 with a gtx 1080?

If not could someone give me a quick summary as to how pairing graphics cards works? Thanks!

You wont be able to SLI them. SLI requires the cards to use the same gpu and vram. The best you'll be able to do is use the 960 as a dedicated physx card and that will only help in the few games that support it.
