Counter-strike:source Fps from Hi to Low

well, my problem is pretty simple
my FPS is usualy between 120 and 180, but will randomly go down to 9-14...
didnt try any other game as of now since i just got back to gaming

any idea what could cause that? cuz its a pain in the a**...
i also experience a bug that causes hl2.exe to ''stop working'' at some times...

here are some of my specs, i dont know em all...
Intel Q6600: C2Q 2.4
GeForce 8600 gt 256mg by XFX
4 gb ram nvidia dual-channel 633mhz (2x2g )
Asus p5ne-sli

used to run it on my dual core 2.8 without troubles...plz help me!

how long does the slow FPS last... is it a momentary stutter... does it happen in the same place?
check the temperatures on both CPU and GPU.... is GPu overclocked?

stays like that from 5 to 15 minutes, then goes back to normal for 5-15 minutes as well, and didnt clock anything....you think it might be overheating?

i changed my hdd so i only installed win vista home premium and let winupdate do the job for the drivers....is windows update up to date?

No. The latest are 190.62, they might fix your problem or you may need to go through previous releases. Are you gaming online?

it could be, check the temps, especially the CPU... just to eliminate that possibility ... and make sure you have the latest drivers as mm suggested
