Couple questions about 144hz TN vs IPS and what would be best for my needs

Hi, I'm looking into getting a new monitor that will be used mostly for gaming.

I've done some research and narrowed it down a bit but I can't decide if I should get a 144hz TN monitor or a 60hz IPS.

My picks are the Benq XL2411Z if I go with 144hz, or the Dell U2414H for IPS.
I'm wondering if an IPS like the dell would be fine for gaming as I rarely play FPS games, mainly strategy/mmo/moba/rpg type games or if it would be to slow.
I'm also wondering if say I only average about 60-80fps in a game I'm playing, if getting a 144hz monitor would be a waste for me, or would it still be noticeably smoother even with the lower fps?

Look i have used a HP Pavilion 23xi IPS monitor 23"
An AOC G2460PQU - 1ms - 144hz
And now i have a 3D Asus VG248QE - 1 - 144hz

If you are not gonna play FPS games you dont need 1ms respnse time. Now in every game if you have a good GPU for example GTX780+ or R9 290+ an 144hz will be a nice choice to maximize your FPS in games.
If you have something above in GPU u dont need a gaming monitor.

An IPS is better, my old 23xi IPS monitor has better color calibration for any of those 2 gaming monitors, so for me is better choice.

Well, I don't know. This might confuse you more, but I'll just say it:
I had a TN screen, 60Hz, 1080p, and I wanted to upgrade. But I wanted an IPS panel, since I'm more casual, more for the looks than for competitive gaming. I had an Asus VE247H, and I upgraded to an Asus MX279H, IPS, 27", 1080p too. From my experience, I do NOT see a big difference between the two monitor's image quality. It's up to you, you might want to check that IPS screen IRL and see if it is worth buying or not.

many will agree, once you go ips, you will never go back. also, you should consider 2560x1440 monitors as there are quite a few now from reputable brands. asus, benq, hp, and acer all have models that range from $350-450 on a good deal.

and i have heard from actual battlefield/fps competitive gamer interviews.... 120/144hz is for people with money to burn(want the best), bragging rights, and money making competitive fps gamers. you are far more likely to become a better gamer with a mechanical keyboard and a quality gaming mouse @ 60fps than you are with a normal keyboard/mouse @ 120fps.

I noticed a big difference when switching to a 144Hz monitor. I've got the ASUS VG248QE http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2HH7G0 and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

When I clicked the buy button I almost thought to myself, did I just waste money? I can say that I do not regret the purchase and moving to a high refresh rate was a great upgrade for general use not just gaming. I did manage to purchase the nVidia 3D Vision 2 kit and playing in 3D is pretty wicked.

I was going to buy that one, but I ended up buying the ASUS MX279H. I'm not sure if I should have done it. I still have 30 days to return it though. I don't know.
