So my cousin needs help, he is going to get a GTX 550 Ti from Nvidia.

Problem is he has the 400w necessary, but he has two 12v rails.

I'm wondering if he'll need an upgrade or will he be fine.

Thanks, Charles.

Solution

pci-e slots are backwards compatable. my 7850 on my computer is running of pci-e 2.0 since i dont have an ivy bridge cpu.
well on the thing, it says the total wattage to the 12v rails is 385w(which i question because 14+15 amp 12v rail = 348w) i would assume it works because the 550ti is a really low end card.(though why not get a hd 7750, about the same power graphical wise with much lower power consumption that could easily just avoid this thread in the first place)

edit: the existance of the 7750 basically makes the 550ti a moot point buy, unless you need the cuda for non gaming purposes or plan to use it as a physx drive because the gtx 460 is not to far off at this price point which performs exceptionally better, at a higher power supply cost though.

He just needs a graphics upgrade for BF3 and Just Cause 2.

Would the 7750 work without a psu upgrade? Or should he just get a psu anyways?

the 7750 is one of the lowest possible power consuming cards on this day and age. it consumes so little power that it doesnt even need a 6 pin to power it. its the go to card for highest non 6 pin gpu
