First off if this is in the wrong catogory please direct me to the right one, I have a MSI Z170A M5 gaming MOBO with an i5-6600K @3.50GHZ CPU, system was built around 7 years ago and still runs great. My question is what would be a good CPU upgrade for that Mobo? I mostly sim race and was looking to give Xplane 12 a go but not sure if my CPU would handle it, not interested in a complete rebuild, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

CPU: Intel i5-6600K @3.50GHZ
Mobo: MSI Z170A M5 Gaming Mobo
Ram: 16GB G.Skill DDR4 2800MHZ
Graphics: Gigabyte 1070 8GB
PSU: 750watts (not sure of the brand)
Windows 10

The i7-6700K is a possibility.

However, it has only a 7.5 percent advantage over the 6600K on the single thread score of a common benchmark.

Both are quad core.

The 6700K has 8 threads rather than the 4 found on the 6600K.

Is that "worth it"? You get to decide.

I've got the same CPU as you and have long since given up the idea of upgrading the CPU only. I don't think it is "worth it", so I'll change both motherboard and CPU.

CPU compatibility list shows this board could support the 7700K. Pricing on one seems to be all over the place. I see an OptiPlex 5050 for sale as a refurb cheaper than you can find the CPU.

Not sure I would spend this way when a 12100 is faster. Obviously would require other platform changes, but also offer another nice upgrade step later.

There really is no 'upgrade' from a 6600k. There's only a 'sidegrade' to a 6700k/7700k. In many cases, you'll see no appreciable difference, the i5 and i7 were intrinsically the same cpu. The only real difference being HT. That splitting cores can possibly alleviate backlog and waiting times on any app that uses 5-8 threads.

That's the only place you'll see any improvement. For games like CSGO, LOL, or any other app that uses 1-4 threads, there'll be no improvement worth mentioning.

So unless you can get an i7 for dirt cheap or close enough, you'd honestly be better off saving up and replacing the platform with something that does offer a noticeable difference in everything.
