CPU and GPU or APU for budget gaming pc?

It depends on how low your budget is and if you can put off your build to save more money.

My recommendation is at least a FX-6300 plus whatever GPU you want. Going with an AMD APU might be the cheaper choice, but that can cost you performance in the long run when you install a more powerful GPU. The CPU core in an APU is a bit weak.

If you were to eventually install something like a R9 280x in your PC, then you will get better performance with it if you had a FX-6300 rather than whatever AMD APU you are looking at.

I'm struggling with this. Somehow my post disappeared when I submitted it. Anywho...

My budget is $800 including external hardware and os. So I'm thinking around $500 on the actual rig. Very budget I know. I plan on upgrading in the future which is why I'm leaning towards the CPU and GPU option... I've ready that for a gaming rig around 50% of your rig cost should be on CPU and GPU... Is this true? And if so any combination in this price range that work well together?

Way better than any apu

I'd say CTurbo should revise his/her setup 😉 You've included the most basics, but OP also needs an OS as said, and further more you may want to throw in additionals that OP may not have like mouse, keyboard and monitor etc... :)

Looks a nice and practical setup, though I'm not an AMD fan for gaming in particular 😀

This leaves $90 for mouse, keyboard, and headset, or that $90 could go toward getting a GTX760 instead.

The i3 4130 and FX6300 are roughly equal in gaming performance when the FX6300 is overclocked. To overclock it, you would need to add an aftermarket cooler.

This looks a very nice build! I may consider getting a similar setup myself as I'm in need of a new rig :)

Has OP found a desired build?
