CPU and GPU

I want to build a new PC.
I want have a 144Hz monitor and wondered if it is smart to buy a Nvidia GTX 1080 with an Intel I7 7700k. I play at 1440p and want to get higher than 60fps avg. Is this system going to last for a few years or should I go with a better GPU or CPU?

GPU is fine, but I would go i7 8700k instead. Little more cost for a lot more room for performance gains in the future.

that combo is perfect. i'm very happy with my 1440p/gtx1080 setup. it will drop below 60fps depending on the game and how high my settings are, but you can tweak it for better consistency. if you're going for perfect, maybe opt for the 1080 ti. it'll last either way. build with www.pcpartpicker.com.

doesnt matter really. you are already buying top of the line of the current series. there is no such thing as future proof. you can upgrade later when its out of date. thats why most of us build.

yea i banged my head against the wall upgrading graphics cards before a single one would play 1440p well... i settled on the 1080. (had 980 ti and 1070).
