I got an ASRock Z370 Killer motherboard, and was going to get an i7-8800k. However I could not find any at the time and instead elected to buy an i7-7700k. I saw they both used LGA 1151 sockets so I thought that would be fine, although I now know that is not the case. Unfortunately, I placed the CPU in the motherboard and closed the clamp. The CPU slid in easily and the clamp closed with just a bit of effort (I've never built a computer before so I don't know if that is abnormal, but I closed it with one finger). As soon as it closed, I saw the warning that my motherboard did not support Intel's 7th gen CPUs. I then took the CPU back out immediately.
Obviously this was a bad move. Now I will either need a new CPU, motherboard, or both. I looked at both the CPU and the motherboard and neither of them had any obviously bent pins, but I don't completely know what to look for. I have read that the physical dimensions of the sockets for 7th and 8th gen are the same, is there any chance either the CPU or motherboard are not broken?
