sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but im new here. i am building my first gaming pc and was installing the cpu but i accidentally bent the cpu retention arm (or whatever its called) the wrong way. it was bent at the base so i couldnt latch it shut, so i tried to bend it back, but it broke. now my cpu wont stay in the socket.

did i just waste $150 on my mobo or can i somehow fix it or get a replacement? if not could i just use duck tape to tape it in there (good ol fix everything with duck tape trick 😉). the duck tape says it can withstand temps of up to 95C so it wouldnt melt or anything

my mobo is the asus Z170 pro gaming, cpu is i5 6600k

oooof that is rough. those things do unscrew so I am sure you could find one if you looked enough, but frankly duct tape is a good idea until then. frankly once you get the heat sink on you do not even need the retainer.

i just need to secure it so i can tip the mobo over to screw in the cooler mount. so it would be fine to use duck tape and then when its done i can just take it off? and after that i am fine without the arm?

If you use duct tape, you're going to fry your board and everything with it. The adhesives will melt and will likely make for a fine dirty coat on the components there. If the motherboard is still under warranty, then, you didn't waste your money. If, however, the motherboard is not under warranty, then, you're SOL because the pins won't make a good connection.

i called asus and they said they didnt cover damage caused by improper handling so they said they wouldnt replace it. i got the system working anyways. cpu is completely stable and i ended up hitting 4.5ghz oc right away so i dont think there is any problem. tightened the cpu cooler a little more than recommended just in case so it wasnt loose.
