100 C temps with 90% utilization. Have a water cooler and 3 extra case fans. why is this happening? It is not overclocked. screenshot attached.

Solution

Well it depends on what you want from your system and the Gigabyte z97hd is after all an entry level MB and not meant for major OCs if that is what you intend.

If I were you I would just try a Decent Air Cooler. If your Microcenter has it get the CRYORIG H7 or a Cooler Master Hyper 212...
Hi Chris :)

It can only be your Water pump, TIM or an excessively high Vcore Voltage in Bios.
Even a Cheap $30 Air cooler would keep that CPU at 60-75C underload at stock 3.5GHz.
Check that the pump is actually circulating liquid, Check that the cooler is correctly mounted and your TIM is applied correctly.
Your pics indicate the CPU is throttling and continued use at those temps will diminish the CPU. Don't keep using the system till this issue is sorted as a diminished CPU will not recover.
What liquid cooler are you using.?
What TIM and how did you apply it.?

I have a corsair H55 water cooler. I just took some alcohol to the cpu top and the water cooler itself, then put down thermal paste. It started at 30 degrees, and has inched up a degree or two per minute since, and is now at 85. I'm going to try to put on more paste and see if that has any effect

Don't just apply more paste as an excessive amount can be just as bad. Remember it's just to fill the tiniest of voids between CPU and cooler plate. I think your H55 is suspect and not circulating liquid fast enough and inadequate quite frankly if temps are raising as described at idle.
Most decent Air coolers perform better than a H55.

I'm going to stop by microcenter on Friday once I get paid and pick up a new one. any recommendations?

Solution

I ended up with a Gemini M4; it runs a higher overclock (from 3.5 to 4.5) than the old PoS water cooler at significantly lower temperatures (35 degrees vs 60 degrees.)

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. I'm happy to have just had to replace the cooler than the entire PC!.
