Might not be the best title because it's not very informative but hello everyone and just wanted to ask a question. I've been looking at some motherboards to upgrade from my current one and I noticed when viewing the specs it says the socket type and what kind of cpus it supports.

I know the socket type must match but was wondering if you could use a different or older cpu. http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=13-130-693
Not the one I want but just an example of what I'm talking about. Under the specs it says the cpu is a 4th Gen Intel. Does this mean that's the only kind that can be used or will a 3rd or second Gen cpu work as long as it's the correct socket type. Thanks!

Solution
For some reason I can't pull up that CPU you linked, but no third-gen Intel Core processor will fit a 4th gen motherboard/socket. All third-gen sockets were LGA 1155, all 4th gen are LGA 1150, etc. As a rule if it's an 1155 processor it will fit an 1155 socket. 775 will fit 775, 1156 will fit 1156, etc. etc. the list goes on, but they're not backwards/cross-compatible, etc, and sometimes just because it's a 775 processor, doesn't mean it will automatically work in a 775 socket (this issue came up between the Pentium D and Core 2 Duo processors, they were all 775, but some 775 MOBOS wouldn't support Core 2 Duos).

Solution
Ok because my main concern was I wanted to upgrade my motherboard soon and didn't want to have to upgrade my cpu right away and from what I've read the third generation is just fine and not much different then the 4th Gen ones. I currently have an i5 2320 and this is the board I was looking at.http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=13-157-293
The board I have now is 1155 so It should work no problems correct?

What exactly would you need to buy other than the CPU? I am assuming you mean the i7 4770k as It was the first CPU i saw on that page. So do you currently have n Intel Motherboard and if you do what socket? But to answer your question in a way. 4th gen is Haswell( LGA1150) 2nd and 3rd Gen are Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge(both use LGA1155 and LGA2011) 1st Gen is Under the Nehalem architecture and there are a number of different names but all use LGA1156 and LGA1366. Also certain Chipsets in Motherboards are recommended or required for different CPUs. ie: an i5 3570k would use a MB with LGA 1155 socket and a Z77 chipset to Overclock I use a Asus P8Z77 V PRO. with my CPU.

Thank you everyone for the quick replies. I didn't realize that the newer generation of cpus used a different socket type all together and that was the answer I was looking for. Now to just get some better parts put into this nice new case I got. (cooler master haf xb) 😀

Ah, okay. Enjoy. :)
