Cpu being lazy...

Hi the Fellas!

So, I'm experiencing some odd issues in my PC performance. It's an old PC, about 5 years old, but I've recently formatted him (6 months ago) and it was very fast and acting normally, but recently he has been every slow, crashes some time, mainly when playing some games. In the beginning, I could play Garry's mod with the graphics on high at 60 fps, now, on normal, it's completely full of breaks and slowdowns... I've checked my CPU usage, and sometimes, even with only Firefox being executed, its using 100% of it. So I've decided to Unninstalled a lot of stuff, used disk clean, disk defragmentation, CC Cleaner, but nothing, so i know is not about the HD. Then I ran the anti virus (Avast!), but still nothing, so it's not a virus or malware. I also ran msconfig to kill some tasks and services, but still, the pc is slow.

So, I really don't know what to do more. Can you guys give me some ideas about what to do?

Intel Dual Core E2000 2.2Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 8600GTS 512MB
4GB RAM
Western 500GB

you could go in the bios and overclock your cpu to 2.6 ghz and notice a mutch faster difference you could scan your pc for spyware or trogan horses becuse they can have dramatic overuse of the cpu you can open task manager and go under process and see whats taking the most cpu usige and end the process if you need help overclocking reply back to me i can help

Now, Ive checked my pc for spywares, and trojans, bur only cookies were found...
I also apllied some cooling paste replacing the old one. Still, the same performance...
About the overclock, I couldnt do it... I went to the bios, but I couldnt change the cpu speed... I would like your help!
Just one thing: Speedfan tells me that the temperature of my cpu is too high (about 52ºC, 4ºC above th normal), isnt overclocking a bit too risky?

kk i need you to send me a link of the thermal paste your using if you can and also your heatsink and i can see if i can find somthing more powerful but still at a low cost

If it was running fine before, could be time for another re-build. I've just re-installed Windows on a computer that was cleaned out several times, CCleaner ran, ran several virus scans on it, defragmented the drive, system would still run very slow and would not even shut down. Re-installed Windows, good as new again. That system was used by a teenager and his mom, so had quite a few web toolbars and spyware programs on it, which were clened up, but did not help much with the overall system.

if you can't overclock you cpu then it does not heave a unlocked multiplier. Only the high end intel cpu's heave a unlocked multiplier (correct me if i'm wrong).

The only thing that I can bring up is that you cpu of you mobo is broken.
check you cpu voltage and watt usage maybe it's to low or to high. And check you power supply.

Well, I was affraid of that being an option, but I guess I'll have to re-install the OS again...
This PC is only used by myself, and I have little thing installed in here, and I only visit Hotmail and Facebook, and play some games on Steam, thats why I found this issues odd...

I can overclock my CPU, I just dont know how I can go the BIOS and change the speeds, but I dont want to burn my CPU, so i wont do it until Im 100% sure of how to do it...

I can overclock my CPU, I just dont know how I can go the BIOS and change the speeds, but I dont want to burn my CPU, so i wont do it until Im 100% sure of how to do it...

I'd leave it as is, or if you can change the speeds, do it very slowly. Going from 2.2 to 2.6 without making sure the system is stable at lower settings is not safe. I you can change the speeds, go up to 2.3 first, run it for a while in some games, if it's stable, move up a bit more. Or just do a re-install of Windows and see if that helps. You may want to use a different hard drive to test things, remove yours, install the new one, see if it runs faster with the new setup. Make sure you install all the drivers after the new Windows setup. If it's faster, good, if not, you may as well use the original drive. You can even re-point your document locations to the old drive so you don't have to copy things over. Or use the old one as a backup and copy the files over to the new drive.
