[SOLVED] CPU Bent pins

Hi guys,

I have bent pins on my motherboard. I have seen the fixes for it on here. However, is there a way of testing the fix without putting the system back together?

Any help would be appreciated.

If your pins are bent, your best bet is to not attempt to fix it, doing so may make it worse. Best option is to get a refund, replace it or get it sent through RMA

My reply kind of depends on how bent they are.....and without seeing them it's kind of tough to give you a good answer.

Do you think they can be easily straightened? or is it such a mess that they never will be able to be straightened.

I've straightened them with needle nose pliers.....I've straightened them with a credit card.....I've straightened them with a razer blade etc.

However, there's no way of testing the fix without putting it together and trying it.

I would love to do that. Unfortunately, my motherboard is 3 years out of warranty. 🙁

Here is my story relating to this problem. My Mobo was also out of warranty at the time.

Many years ago I had an HP that was used primarily for gaming and as such I was always tinkering with things. A friend told me aobut re-pasting the CPU with better thermal compund for cooler temps and longer life. so I decided that I need to re-[aste my CPU. I was very inexperienced in computer tech at that point other than changing a GPU or adding a new PCI card. I did all the disassembly and was about to put the new thremal paste onto the CPU when a fit of curiosity hit me and I decided to take the CPU out to see what it looked like. I did not know what ZIF meant at that point and when I put the CPU back in a gave it a just little extra push......I bent 27 pins that I could count with a magnifying sheet.

I got out my needles and picked the closest size to my pins I then got comfy at my desk a proceeded to manipulate the pins very slowly. this worked well to get them "standing up" straighter but many were still out of alignment grid wise. my redneck solution for that was getting avery light piece of note paper and placing it between the rows and or columns of pins and set to manipulating them into a "straight" formation. This worked well because the papaer would deform witht the misaligned pins. after about three hours of tinkering with pins and sweating bullets about breaking on off it was back to the new form of normal. I was able to set the CPU die back into the socket and it finally "looked" right so I locked it down and put the new paste on. after everything was reinstalled I fired it up and it booted. I hope this helps you get your Mobo working again
