Hello. I bought the i7 7700k since it’s release a few years ago and there are so many intel cpus on the market now. I am looking for a CPU significantly better than the 7700k so I can notice an improvement. Is there any recommended one yet not far too expensive?

Solution
A few points to consider: Do you have a GPU significantly faster than a GTX1060/1660, and a monitor capable of displaying more than 60 Hz refresh?

(If wanting another 5 year system, I sure as heck would not be looking at another 4c/8t system in 2022....; but certainly the 12100F is the fastest quad core, bar none!)

Think along the lines of a12400F minimum....and since it's for gaming, I'd make sure your GPU is well above minimums listed above, lest you end up with essentially the same FPS as before. (Once a GPU is 'thoroughly saturated' at a given resolution, further increases in CPU IPC and/or clock speed prowess often gain very little in average FPS...)

You can compare frame rates of 12100F/7700K below in...
There are dozens of CPUs faster than the 7770k.

"Significantly better" is a judgement for you to make...how much is that?

"not far too expensive" is another judgement for you...how much is that?

What can't you do with the 7700k that you would like to do?

Where you are or where you will shop might make a difference.

I reccommend my Core i3-12100F which is almost twice as fast as 7700K in both single core performance and also in multi. See my comparsion is CPUz screenshoot,

And it is a 120USD CPU...

There are many CPUs out on both Intel and AMD side, though switching to AMD currently makes no sense when you build a whole new system. Too expensive compaired to Intel. It would be useful if you tell us where you live, thoufh, since prices vary greatly. As a result, the following basically only applies to Europe and even here differences can be big.

As for what to get, there are multiple options. The mentione i3-12100(F) is an awesome chip for the money and goes for somewhere between 80-110€ over here. Add a H610 board, or one of the cheaper B660s, and you are looking at a price point of around 200-250€ tops, and that's the high side. For around 190-200€ you get the i5-12400(F), which is a 6 core CPU that is really awesome for gaming. With a B660, that would be around 300€. Then, for one of the bigger chips from the 12600(K) up you enter the upper mainstream to enthusiast segment (i9-12900K). They all have cheaper non-K variations that are only marginally weaker, but often cost 50+ bucks less depending where you look. However, the cheapest Z690-boards (and I personally would get for the K-CPUs, non-K can use a B660, too) start at around 170€, plus at least 350€ for the CPU, so they aren't cheap anymore. It's similar on the AMD side, with more expensive CPUs but cheaper boards. They combine to around the same price but are less powerful than their 12th gen, though. They might have a lower energy intake, but I personally don't see why I should complain about 7W idle and 60W tops in games for my 12700K, if I'm honest...

You can compare frame rates of 12100F/7700K below in gaming with both a 3080 and 3060 in a handful of games, but, realize if your GPU is even below that, the differences will be even much less as well.

In short: Go 12400, or, if not really 'unsatisfied' with your current FPS, wait for Intel 13th gen and/or AMD's AM5 to drop in several months...

Nice cpu. Unfortunately everybody is sold out and has no idea when or if stock will be replaced because there's very little profit to Intel. Intel is pushing its higher end cpus which have a much larger profit margin.

Op, you ask a hard question that's not easy to answer and impossible to answer with any certainty. If you have older equipment, like a 1080p /60Hz monitor and a gtx970, you could throw in a 12900k and see absolutely no improvement except in high count multiplayer raid groups, which would have less lag.

So asking for a cpu which has obvious gaming improvements visually is entirely different to obvious benchmark results.

But if you have a 3070 on a 144Hz or better monitor and play nothing but latest and greatest games, then even a 12400 or 5800x is going to show improvements in fluidity and smoothness, especially concerning heavy multi-player and heavy cpu bound games.

All your equipment needs to be in sync. The fastest runner on the planet wearing high heels will not catch your average teenager wearing running shoes. To really see improvement, the monitor and gpu must match the cpu.
