CPU Bottleneck GPU?

Hello, I have come to a personal conclusion that my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU as fps stays the same in most demanding games regardless of the settings I change. my question to you guys is do you agree and what CPU would you recommend I upgrade to? and also do you think my build is receiving enough power with the 750W PSU?

Spec:
CPU: AMD FX8350 (4GHZ)
GPU: AMD HD 7990 (6GB)
RAM: 8GB
HDD: 500GB
PSU: Corsair CX750

Thanks in advance!

Yeah I would go for that, make sure you clean off all the old thermal paste before mounting the new cooler.

The stock cooler for the 8350 is useless in my opinion, plus its loud. Even on my work computer which I dont overclock I had to change the stock cooler due to the noise under...

That CPU, is in AMD's top CPUs. There is no way it's bottlenecking your GPU. I would look at benchmarks for the HD 7990 and compare what your getting, with that benchmark. I don't believe your PSU is bottlenecking the card either. The recommended PSU power is a 750W PSU with 46A on the 12v rails. Your PSU is a 750W with 62A on the 12v rails, so clearly, your have a lot of power to handle the card.

What games are you playing, what program are you using to measure FPS, and what FPS are you getting?

And its possible your RAM or HDD is bottlenecking your system (if they are, they must be really, really slow...). But, that depends on their speed and stuff. So, do you have anymore info on the RAM and HDD? Here is a useful program that can give you very detailed specs of your PC.

Hi. What do you mean by foster stays the same? Even when you change it from ultra to low? I think cpu is good. You have lots of head room to overclocked it with proper cooling. Your psu may be throttling your system down since you have 7990 and fx which is power hog and cx series psu are for budget not performance. I would upgrade it to 1000w gold psu such as RM or ax series if you want to stay with corsair or EVGA makes nice and reliable psus @ good price. I wouldn't change cpu.

Your CPU will bottleneck that card but not to the extend for the game to be unplayable or the FPS to stay the same across all games.

Read this article
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-fx-8370e-cpu,3929-7.html

"To put it nicely, the FX-8370E is a true middle-of-the-road CPU. Using it only makes sense as long as the graphics card you choose comes from a similar performance segment.
Depending on the game in question, AMD’s new processor has the potential to keep you happy around the AMD Radeon R9 270X/285 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 or 660 Ti level
A higher- or even high-end graphics card doesn’t make sense, as pairing it with AMD's FX-8370E simply limits the card's potential."

Those are just single player benchmarks, will be worst in mutiplayer gameplay.

Games: Arma 3 10-15fps
Battlefield 4: 40-60fps
just a few examples but in my eyes i should be getting a lot more.

What am I looking for on Passmark? what info should I post to you?

the Fps stays arround the same no matter what the settings are on, for example 15 fps arma 3 on low, 15 fps on arma 3 on ultra...

So what Cpu would you recommend I upgrade to?

Ahh right, No its not in all games. In Csgo i get 200fps no probs its just in things like Arma and Battlefield (high demanding games) that it is effected. i would like to sort this problem out in time for Gta 5 PC, thats my goal

I might just try that in the mean time if i decide to upgrade as i need a new cooler anyway :) as i have been having some cooling issues.

Your symptoms sound exactly like a CPU bottleneck, however it can be caused by overheating motherboard VRMS, which cause CPU throttling.

What motherboard do you have?

And what cooling issues are you having, as these could potentially be causing throttling of performance.

MOBO: ASUS M5A79 EVO R2.0

Cooling issues consist of cpu overheating a few times not even forming a pattern... sometimes under load, sometimes idle, resulting in the system shutting off power. I didnt think the two issues would be connected thats why i didnt put it in the original post.

I say that your CPU should be fine. Maybe OC it if you want, but it's not worth the cost to upgrade. I think your problem must be elsewhere.

Perhaps you have v-sync enabled or a similar feature. This will cause the software to limit your framerate to usually either 60fps or 120fps depending on your screen.

Unless your PSU is genuinely broken, it is not limiting your system. It may not be the highest quality and it may die prematurely due to the load, but I don't see how it could cause your symptoms without causing your entire system to crash under load.

If you could give more information on what framerates you are actually getting and in which applications, it would be easier to help.

V-sync is off on all occasions. Arma 3 10-15fps, Battlefield 4 40-60fps. any others i cant remember off the top of my head and you'd have to give me some time to get them if needed.

I suspect with your overheating issues and that you are likely on the stock cooler, I would suggest upgrading the cooler to something like the CM Hyper 212 evo, and additional case fans (depending on what you have already).

Then overclock once cooling is fine.

Yep Stock cooler, only have two standard case fans currently: one 140mm mounted on the window of the case one 120mm on the back. Thanks for you replies i will defiantly try that cooler!

Your PSU is sufficient in my opinion.
