CPU can not recognized

Hi all,

I recently got a PC built and I brought it home to get it running. When I turned it on it booted into windows as normal, but within a minute it said something like “system error, windows needs to restart” after the restart it said my CPU was too hot, and I opened up the Asus Z370-e gaming motherboard options and saw that one of my h100i v2 fans was not spinning or being recognized by the motherboard. I’m wondering how do I get the second fan to be recognized by the motherboard and if one of those fans not spinning could be the cause of a 90 degree Celsius boot up of my i7-8700k? I really need this figured out ASAP and any help is appreciated!

Hi guys,

We got it fixed! It turns out one of my CPU cooling fan cables was not plugged into the always on setting and instead was on manual. Everything now runs just fine and thank you for all your help!
You had this built? As a service you paid for, or by a friend? If a service you paid for, I'd be speaking to whoever assembled this for you.

Is the second fan actually connected?

What are your full specs? Is the system overclocked?

I don't believe any chip on Z370 would actually cause a shutdown at 90'C.... so that's odd, and likely not directly temp related.
To shoot up that high within a minute is very strange too - as an H100i v2 is a strong cooler.
Even with only one fan running, I'd be a bit surprised to see 90'C within a couple of minutes unless you were stressing the CPU hard.

If you don't want to go back to who assembled it, can you confirm if the fan is actually connected to the motherboard/pump/splitter? I think the H100i connects the fans to the pump, but may actually be direct to the motherboard (or via a splitter to a single motherboard fan header)

The H100i V2 has one cable coming from the pump that plugs into the motherboard, one cable that splits into two fan connectors and the usb connector. Make sure that the one cable is plugged into the cpu fan header on your mother board and make sure that both fans are securely plugged into the splitter cable they may look like they are connected but are not making proper contact so give them a good push. You can also check to make sure nothing is making contact with the fan blades causing them not to spin at all. Try and spin that fan with your finger if it does not spin freely then it may be jammed up by something.
Your temps going up that fast means either the cooler pump is bad or the pump head is not installed correctly and is not making proper contact with your cpu. Try and tighten the screws for the pump assembly on your cpu to see if they are loose or take of the cooler completely and reinstall making sure that you are getting proper contact with your cpu.

If this was built by a company then get them involved for sure, if it was your friend and you paid him then get him involved too.

PM from the OP.

I don’t know where the reply button is on my phone so I’ll message you here.

I got it built at a computer store in my town, I had recently purchased a new case, motherboard and CPU and decided to let them handle the switchover and install instead of me accidently messing it up. They said it booted up fine after they built it but needed windows to be reinstalled when I got home.

I got home and it booted into windows so that was fine, but within a minute it forced a shutdown. I tried to boot it up again and the same thing happened. There were no applications running when I booted it and everything seemed fine except for that fan not spinning. The guys who built it said they applied new paste and everything. Maybe the CPU-FAN plug got loose on the way home though I don’t remember any bumps or turns. Maybe the h100i isn’t working and I’ll just have to buy a new one, but I brought it back and they said it should be fixed by tomorrow, and hopefully that’s true. If not I’ll try and look around the PC myself or keep looking on here for any more responses. Thanks for your response again!

Yeah, this sounds like the store's issue to me.

While the cooler *could* be faulty, I would expect a shutdown near instantly - and that certainly should have presented itself during their assembly/testing.

I suspect either than fan &/or pump is not connected securely.

Those aren't cables that could realistically be "bumped" loose in transit with appropriate care taken.
