CPU causing PC to freeze randomly?

Hello guys

I have a PC from a friend and I can not find why it is freezing. It's a very basic AMD PC. This started to happen after he bought a different motherboard and a SDD. He gave it to a friend to swap the motherboards and when he got it back it started to freeze randomly without bsod. I took the pc in and tried the following things.
Swapped his cheap old PSU with a Corsair CX750
Swapped his memory RAM with brand new working ones and tried them in different slots
Swapped his GTX 650TI with my GTX 970
Swapped hard drives with clean installation of both windows 7 and windows 10.
Ran MemTest86 for 3.5h on a 2x8 kit of Crucial Ballistic RAM without any errors.

So I am pretty much out of ideas by now and I am considering replacing the CPU with a brand new FX 6300. He currently has a FX 4100 and has had it for about 3 years..
Can a CPU really cause a system to freeze without any bsod or any problems before booting ?

Ohh and I forgot to mention that I have sent the motherboard back and they tested it for 48 straight hours without any issues and eventually they sent it back to me saying it's ok.....

try turning off the cpu cache to see if it the cpu cache. make sure the mb bios is up to date. make sure the ram speed is set right. if your ram is faster the n1600 speed downclock it to 800 speed standard. make sure the cpu and mb if asus is not set to overclock/performace mode. if it not cpu it can be bad vrm that over heating and causing bad power. also use hdtune and hard drive test tools to check to make sure the drive controller not going bad. also use hardware info set it to logging and sensor make sure 12v rail and other power rails are holding.

I have tried Crucial ballistics 1333MHZ RAM and Samsung 1600 MHZ RAM . VRMs are cool since I have put the motherboard on it's cardboard box and assembled the parts on it. The motherboard has also been sent back and been tested for 48 straight hours by CCL computers in the UK.

outcome?
