Okay quick update, i received a used i5-650 from a friend and was unsure of whether it would work with my motherboard due to it being clocked at 3.20GHz and yet the website for my motherboard recommends <== 2.93GHz, but it also recommends CPU's of the i5-6xx series. Will my motherboard downclock the CPU or is this a risk not worth taking?

My Computer Specs are as follows: HP Pavillion p6325a
This has been modified slightly. Added GPU Rx470 and 500W Power Supply
MB: MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E)
CPU: Intel Core i3 540
RAM installed: 2x4GB Kit

The website I referred to

Specifications: https://support.hp.com/us-en/produc...ries/4079858/model/4184718/document/c02072590

If I've missed any stats, let me know

Thanks In advance

Is your current i3-540 working at 3.06Ghz or 2.93Ghz ?
If it is being downclocked to 2.93, then i5-650 will do the same.
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz, 3067 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
From my system information I can confirm that it is still running at the original clock however would it still be safe for the i5, since its at 3.20GHz.

Commendable
In the link you provided if you click the "+" button next to "Processor upgrade information" it says the Maximum processor core frequency <= 2.93GHz regardless if you install an i3, i5 or i7.

I would make sure your BIOS is up to date also.
