Question CPU compatible or not?

Bought a second hand Q8200 CPU seeing that I currently have a Socket 775 motherboard. Thus, would be able to swap CPU and get a big boost over a very old E2160.

I also have a E7600 which I assumed was fried that also made me decide to search for another CPU.

Thus, the E2160, E7600 and Q8200 are all Socket 775 as is my Foxconn 45CM-S motherboard.

The E2160 boots up fine and goes into Windows. The Q8200 and E7600 just gives me a black screen (no POST or beeps or nothing).

Thus, I have tried to update my BIOS. After a huge struggle I think I managed that using a downloaded .BIN (731F1P27) and Fox LiveUpdate utility. Tried the Q8200 and E7600 with the same result.

Now for the questions :

  1. Can someone perhaps confirm if the E7600 and Q8200 are compatible with my 45CM-S mb? I have checked the net and some says yes and some say no.
  2. Is the BIOS I flashed to, the latest one for my mb?
  3. Did I actually flash my BIOS successfully? System info says "Phoenix Tech 6.00 PG 7/30/2008" on Win 7.

Thank you

I'd be fairly surprised if either CPU worked. This was a 945GC chipset motherboard, one of the very oldest that could run the Core2Duos and still capable of running old Pentium 4s. I don't recall -- and I could be wrong since it's been a long time -- motherboards with that chipset being able to support any Core2Quads.

As for the E7600, while it's a dual core, it's a Penryn from much later, using a different process, and again I'd be surprised if it worked on this motherboard. That it's all the same socket is necessary, but far from sufficient.

Hi @HansieSlim

Looks like you have the latest Bios as 731F1P27 comes up the most. I'll look more when I get home or another member here will verify. Here is a link of Bios updates for your mobo. FoxxConns site freezes every time I go to it so I can't switch to English.

Dunno if that' the correct and final Bios &/or it flashed correctly.

Yes to both CPU's.

Umm, don't use that site for this purpose. It's not using actual specs; it's just a list of CPUs that are of the same socket.

For example, that site would have you believe that Skylake motherboards can run an i9-10900k.

https://www.pc-specs.com/mobo/Asus/Asus_Z170-A/3473/Compatible_CPUs

They can't. Because the site knows nothing but the socket and just lists anything that's the same socket as compatible. The LGA 775 socket lasted a long time and compatibility is quite a problem with those different generations.

Yeah I went back thru and took a harder look at a few of the others and didn't seem like the list of supported CPU's was realistic. :) Original post edited. Thanks!

Bummer Foxxconn's site isn't loading as I found an old forum post showing this link on Foxconns site listing CPU's for the OP's mobo. Does the link work for any of you? I'm getting a network error when I click on it.

Doesn't work for me. They probably broke the page years ago and nobody noticed.

Foxconn's never really good at this kind of support. By contrast, I can type in pretty much any 15-year-old ASUS motherboard and find a CPU support list in like 45 seconds.

I will still tinker with my current mb although my patience is wearing thin. If I do decide to chuck it, which chipset would work for the E7600 and Q8200?

I also cant get onto the Foxconnchannel website.

Would appreciate if you can make sure regarding the latest BIOS.

Don't want to spend more on an old dinosaur CPU :)

Well thanx for the help guys. Like I said, thought I will be able to do a straight swap with much more power due to the same socket.

Will see what mb I can get I will perhaps ask you guys before I buy. Well I am an MSI fan with ASUS a close 2nd...so lets hope for the best.

Yeah, the 775 boards went by chipset. And if you look, the I945GC is different to the i945GM etc. It got really confusing. You can physically fit any 771 or 775, but the chipset determines if it'll work, regardless of bios. For instance my q6600 couldn't be used with a 915 chipset, as that was pentium D but would work on select 945 and had pc ability with 965.

Even if you look on cpu-upgrade, several ppl say an e8500 works on this board. It doesn't. It works on the 945GX, different, newer chipset.
