Hi All,
Building new system
Antec SLK3700BQE
Asus P4C800 de luxe
3.0GHz P4
3HDDs
CD-RW + possible DVD-RW
two sticks 512mb Crucial memory
No frills graphics card(fx5700)
plus the usual odds and sods

Can anyone recommend a h/sink/cooler for the cpu and choice of 120m/m case
fan/s
I will not be overclocking.

Almost my identical system built last March. (2 serial HDs, better
graphics card). Used the Sonata case from Antec... it comes with a 120
mm exhaust fan.. (which I turned to blow air in to the case)
I installed a Zalman cooler on my CPU.. works great..
The one thing to make sure of is to properly clean and apply some
thermal grease.
I was concerned about removing the stock Intel cooler. Installing the
darn thing had me really worried about breaking the board, takes a lot
of pressure.. Anyway, I decided the stock Intel cooler was too noisy
and decided to go quiet with a Zalman so had the dealer take my Intel
cooler off and install the Zalman...
Wrong move. He (young kid) decided the old thermal paste was
sufficient.. When I ran my CPU at 100% for extended time the temp
would go up to ~55-60 C. Recently took it apart, found visible hot
spots on the CPU, cleaned it all and applied Arctic Silver. Now it
runs at ~38 40 C

5700 is nothing to sneeze at, especially if you already own it. But, I
wouldn't buy it at this point, the 6600 is a better choice, or 6600GT if
you can afford it.

In the same vein, unless I already owned the S478 MB and/or CPU, I
wouldn't go Socket 478. If I were buying Intel right now both I would
definitely go Socket T a.k.a. 775. The CPU price is actually a little
cheaper, and has a brighter future.

If you are not into overclocking, you can "go quiet" and get an Arctic
Cooling ACSS4U Silencer 4 Ultra which has a variable-speed fan with its
own thermister. Unlike other thermister fans it is really variable-speed
not just two-speed. The Ultra TCL model has a clear fan with blue LED's
if you are into that.

I also have the heatsink the other poster recommended, the Cooler Master
Aero 4 Lite. It is a great cooler for overclockers, but is big and can
make a lot of noise when turned up. Being manually controlled you can
turn it down until it is reasonably quiet, but because it is manually
controlled you are dependent on some kind of temperature monitor to tell
you if you need to turn it up or are allowed to turn it down.

The Aero 4 Lite is pretty "cool", though, to leave 2 hours of heavy duty
gaming and find the CPU at 39C, and the speed control is only at 80%!
