CPU Core Speed is going too high (picture included)

So long story short I have had some troubles with my laptop freezing ONLY while playing games and I have tried literally everything to fix. I noticed that my Core Speed is going at 2.9 GHz - 3.1 GHz when my processor says 2.2 GHz. Could this be why my computer has been freezing? I have never overclocked my computer (not even sure if I could with this laptop) however I have installed MSI Afterburner and lowered the core clock and the memory clock however that did not change anything.

Now when it freezes is it just the game and you kill the game or does the entire windows freeze and you have to do a hard shutdown and reboot?

The whole system will freeze, sound and everything, and I have to do a hard shutdown. Is disabling Intel Turbo Boost something that could help solve this problem?

Never heard of turbo boost causing this and in most cases when you get a hardware error your best a BSOD but not always.

Do you have the lastest Nvidia drivers? How hot does the laptop seem to be when you play your games? Does it seem to be random or like after about 20 minutes of playing or just freezes, ect?

I have the latest Nvidia drivers. And the laptop stays at a normal temperature. I just got a new heat sink and reapplied thermal paste as well and cleaned the whole system. The issue occurs at random (usually within the first 15-20 minutes of playing) and after a hard shut down and I reboot into the game I was playing it will happen again usually within the first 5 minutes.

I have tried literally everything to fix this. I'm about to come to the conclusion that my motherboard is just faulty and I need to buy a new one.

As a side note turning off Intel turbo boost did lower my core speeds to where I expected them to be however that did not fix the problem

Yea I don't see how turning Turbo off would affect anything. If anything you would see your system be slower since its always adjusting the CPU from 2.2 to 3.2 Ghz.

And yea when the system just freezes like that and doesn't give a BSOD its hard to diagnose. Its like having a patient and everything if great then the next thing they just Drop dead for no reason. Unlike a BSOD its like hey I'm Gre...Ugh stomach hurts. and you rest and then your good again. At least you know hey somethings wrong here.

Try a few things here though.

One check the Hard drive status. Just in case.

Install that and if it comes back Good then great. If it says Caution let me know what it is.

Also try opening up a Command Prompt as Admin (If you have UAC turned off just type CMD in the Search/Run bar. Otherwise go to the Accessories folder and right click on Command Prompt and Run As Administrator.

Type in SFC /Scannow just to make sure theres no windows corruption.

Also when you last updated drivers did you do a Clean install (It removes and then installs new drivers) or did you just update them? I always recommend a Clean Install with Nvidia. My Buddy who works at EVGA also high recommends that you update your drivers that way so that no older drivers get left behind on accident.

Now if it only happens on games i don't think its an issue with the motherboard. Can you give me the Laptop model number? I'm assuming its a MSI brand since you have After Burner installed.

-I installed that CrystalDiskInfo program and it came back Good.
-I ran SFC /scannow in my cmd prompt and it did not find any errors or violations
-When I updated my drivers I did a clean install. Prior to updating these drivers I re-installed Windows 7 and I reformatted my hard drive.

The laptop model is a Dell XPS L502X

Adding on to my last post I actually will sometimes get a BSOD but it's VERY rare. I just happened to get one and the only thing I could read on it is DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL before my computer shut down. I'll be doing some more research on what that means in a little bit

ha helping someone with that same exact issue. Try download the MemTest in my Signature, then unzip the ISO from the file and burn it to a CD. Then boot your PC from the CD and let it run the Memory test. Best to let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour but you'll almost know right away if there is bad Memory in the first minute or so. It will list them in Red.

If you can try to get me that .dmp file. upload to Mediafire or another one of those free file hosting site and give me the link so i can check it out.

Thanks for the reply! I booted that MemTest from a CD and it did not run anything on startup however I did get the message:

I researched this and it appears it is hard drive related? I know that my hard drive is connected properly because both Dell and I have both reinserted my hard drive before and this problem still occurs. Maybe I need a new hard drive all together?

That message means its trying to boot from a network.

Yea if you go into the bios and its probably in boot options not sure, it can vary from PC to PC, But there should be some kind of settings for the LAN. It might have a Enable/Disable Onboard lan and then an Enable/Disable PXE boot. Disable the PXE boot.

PXE boot is main a thin client kinda thing. Messed with them back in high school. Took some old Pentium 1 Machine and put them on the network. no hard drive not CD Rom no Floppy. Just motherboard, Network, CPU, Memory. And then it tried to look for a signal on the LAN cable to see if a server is broadcasting a signal for it to boot from the server. And Volia it loads up. It pretty much just uses the old PC as a Video card and connections for Mouse and Keyboard and they are technically running on the server it self.

But you should be able to disable that in bios OR Turn remove it from the Boot menu in the Bios or Set it to boot AFTER the hard drive and DVD.

I got an external modem tha reset my PC at random and I get a very similar message, try to disable all related to lan on bios to see what hapends

How exactly do I get the DMP files? This is a laptop and the BIOS are very limitied. When I try to boot from CD I just get that message that I said earlier
