CPU Core Voltage 3 is very high and appears red in BIOS

Hey so I've just built a new PC and it's my first time doing so.
I have been getting a red core voltage reading when I hit monitor in BIOS and was wondering why that could be.
My specs: Asus z87-a mobo
i5 4690k processor
Asus R9 390x GPU
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
G Skill Ripjaw X 2x4gb RAM
Thermaltake Smart 750W ATX 12V V2.3 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply

Here is picture of my reading in BIOS. The value on the red reading never changes. Very concerned about my processor getting higher than tolerable voltages.

Also I have been getting the cold boot issue that many of the Asus z87-a mobo's have. Do you think that they could be connected? Please help!!
 


Yes it is still happening...fluttering between 1.920 and 1.904

 


Do you think that it could be related to the fact that my PC won't POST with a cold boot?
 


Hmm I've seen posts where people have RMA'd their mobo and had the same issues so I'm not sure if it's worth it or not.
 
It's always difficult to troubleshoot these things over the internet. In this case I believe it's your motherboards making a conversion error or something more technical, either way. There is no way anyone can help you fix that online. Update BIOS if you know how to, and RMA it if that still doesn't help. If you get the same issue with the cold boot and motherboard voltage calculation is wrong, then it's possible your power supply is to blame, though no signs what so ever of anything unusual in terms of temperatures, so clearly the voltage shown in BIOS is 'fake'.
 


Have you tried to manually lower the voltage to the same setting as the other cores?

As Suzuki mentioned it's most likely a BIOS / Firmware error and less likely a faulty ground or malfunctioning motherboard. Go to ASUS's website and download the latest BIOS if you haven't flashed your motherboard.
 


I respectfully disagree. The PSU has nothing to do with voltage settings in the BIOS, and this is a Haswell, so the voltage is controlled by the FIVR (Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator) in the CPU.

As far as the voltage being "fake" I see no evidence of that. In my experience, the BIOS has the most consistently accurate readings in the system.

PSU = Cold boot problem, likely anyways.
 
I tried to use their updater and even after I had downloaded and installed the drivers it still wouldn't allow me to use their tool. So I simply went into bios and updated the BIOS from a USB. Still showing the same voltage output though.

So now I have the latest BIOS
 


Contact ASUS Tech Support and find out what is the trick to using the installer. TECH SUPPORT Click on "Contact Us" and send them an e-mail. You may have to register your MOBO first.

So I figured out how to prevent my cold boots from not POSTing...for the meantime anyways. In BIOS I changed the XMP from Auto/Disabled to Profile 1/Enabled! Seems to have worked. However I did this at the same time as reseating and reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and heatsink...so who knows what is the true answer here. If you're having the Red CPU LED I suggest both of these actions!
