It could be coincidence. It might have just been its time. But my PC hard crashed and went into a boot loop while installing Ubuntu. I've stripped it down to one stick of ram. No drives, pci devices. It powers on and my Asus x99-a displays a 00 error code and the CPU led is on. I was in the demo os when it happened. And I was at the stage before selecting "something else" for disk partitioning. Any precedent for this? Couldn't find a similar situation while searching.

Probably just a coincidence? I want to set up a dual boot, but I'm more than a bit reticent to do so now, especially when I get a new platform.

The CPU is a 5820k. It has had a 24/7 oc of 4.45 @ 1.3volts since late 2015. The cooler is a kraken x61. So it stays under 70. You would think if it were going to die it would do so under load.

Did you remove all of the power from the PC e.g. unplugged PSU? New PSU's still supply mobo with some power even when off.

Yeah.
Unplugged it, held down clear cmos button, took out the battery.
Currently have another psu plugged in with the same result.

It's bizarre. You would think a CPU would die while being stressed.
Not just when installing an OS.
Could also be the motherboard?
