GIGABYTE GA-H170-D3HP LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
says that it works with Intel i5, however, it seems like i have to press hard enough to harm the pins/processor to close it.

forgive my arbitrary units,[strike] (i'm, american, so without actually measuring it, i can't eye it up in mm)[/strike] but it looks like, with the plastic cover off, but no cpu in, when fully closed, that the metal pieces that push down on the cpu want to be 1 arbitrary unit above the pins, however, the total depth of the cpu i have seems to be 1.5 to 2 arbitrary units. (meaning pushing down will bend the pins)

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge. this is my first time building a pc.

(edit) i thought of a better metaphor; the distance between the socket and pins when closed and empty is about the same distance as the length of the white part of your fingernail if you haven't clipped it for a week. the cpu however, is about the same thickness as the white part of your finger nail if you haven't clipped it for two weeks.

It`s just one of those things, the first time you build your own Pc from the ground up with parts the confidence is lacking along with the fear of breaking something by being heavy handed with parts.

with what it cost you to build the system.

Potatotate.

At least now you know what is the right way to install your cpu in the cpu socket of the motherboard and what to expect next time when it comes to any cpu upgrade of your system ect.

It`s only natural to be over concerned and question if you are doing things right.

And better to double check or ask for help.
Enjoy your first Pc build anyway !
