Hello,

Just built a computer for a friend (specs below). When I turn in on it posts (well it does now as it had a blown RAM module which I manged to diagnose and instead of 16gb it now has 12gb at present) but I get the CPU FAN ERROR message.

The CPU Heatsink Fan isn't spinning. I am using the standard INTEL heatsink. 3 other chassis fans are spinning as are the GPU Fans. Lights are coming on the DVD drive, GPU, Motherboard.

The BIOS is seeing the CPU and RAM but the fan isnt spinning. I did move the fan with my finger to make sure it wasn't caught on something. Also tried unplugging and replugging the fan back into the CPU Fan Header to check it was fully installed.

Is this as simple as:

Test CPU Heatsink Fan in other header on motherboard? It is spins its the header and if it doesn't its the fan.

I have a spare heatsink from my own i3 build would this be ok for the G4560? (if its the fan thats not working)

Build Specs:
CPU - Pentium G4560
M/Board - ASUS Prime B250M-A
Memory - Crucial Ballistix Sport 2400mhz 12gb (was meant to be 16gb but one module is bad)
Hard Drive - Western Digital 1tb caviar blue
GPU - ASUS Strix RX 470 8GB
Power Supply - EVGA 430W W1
Case - Thermaltake Versa H15

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this is only my second build and I didn't encounter this on my first one.

Thanks

Rich

Solution
Your spare heatsink would work fine, intel mountings have remained the same and the i3 and Pentium are similar power.

Your testing methodology is sound, it will give you the only possible answer.

Would it also be best to set the BIOS back to defaults to ensure no settings have been fiddled with?

I am going to test CPU on fan header and vice versa as I know the case fan works. This should tell me whats bad and what part needs replacing. May still try resetting BIOS although I dont think a setting in there would have set the CPU fan not to spin.

ASUS Q-fan does have the ability to turn off fans if there is no load on the system. Its possible that happened but I'm not sure it turns off the CPU fans as well, it may just be case fans. Re-setting the BIOS would clear this if you happened to set it.

All sorted now. Plugged the CPU Fan into a Case Fan Header and no spinning at all. Used the spare heatsink from my i3 6100 and it worked so it wasn't the header just a broke fan.

I contacted Aria who I bought the processor off and they are sending a replacement CPU cooler. So I will have a spare again.

Many thanks for your answer Rogue Leader.
