So I've just recently upgraded my PC with a new motherboard (MSI Z97-G45) and a new CPU (i7-4790k) and I'm using the stock fan that came with the CPU. However, whenever I play a game, the CPU fan gets really loud. The strange part however, is that if I minimize the game while still keeping it running, the fan quiets down again. For some reason the fan is only actually loud when games are visibly up on my screen. They can still be running but minimized and the CPU fan is quiet. Any ideas on why this is?

Solution
The CPU usage goes a lot lower when you minimize the screen, thus helping it cool down, which is why your fan noise goes down, because it cools down and the speed goes down.

It's normal, you just need to get a better cooler to kill the noise.

Which would solve the noisy problem but would also make the stock cooler perform worse at doing it's job (cooling the CPU) then it's already doing.
