Hello, I recently started building a PC, (its the second day now) and everything is set in place and the computer turns on. The only thing is, is that the CPU Fan does not start spinning and I think because of this, I get no display. I am using the stock fan for the Intel Pentium G3258, but I have another fan still in its package brand new, the only thing is I would have to go buy some thermal paste if installing that is completely necessary. Thanks!

Hello... ALL Fan will start Spinning first, once Proper Power is applied... The Pc will not complete booting if the MB Bio's doesn't see the CPU fan turning... it's a safety feature, to protect your CPU.

YES... You can test all fans for a short moment, without removing the thermal paste or heatsink... plug them into your MB sys_fan connector and apply power.

So your saying, that it not turning on immediatly is perfectly normal?

Also, I think that the motherboard might be the problem because some things on there dont work either, but the PC can still run without them.

I cant get to the BIOS, because the CPU fan has to be spinning to pop up a screen, correct me if im wrong.

Hello... I didn't mention going into the BIO's at all... to do those steps... As it is not needed.
A) Do you have a manual/PDF for this MB?
B) What is your experience and Tech level?
C) Have you ever "flashed" a device before?

New MB's come off the Production Line with no Bios' Flashed into them... there are methods and procedures to do this without a screen and keyboard inputs. B )

But Yes... things would be a lot easier if you can get your Fans/PS/MB/Ram/CPU/Video working together. But it seems something or somethings are preventing this. So when this happens you need to test Each part in another working computer, and make sure the MB has a Good Program.

1) Here is the Manual: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/www.mrcdn.com/pdf/msi/msi-h81m-e33-owner-s-manual.pdf

2) My Tech Level is pretty high, I can name you what a BIOS is, How to build a motherboard, how to choose a graphics card, to check compatibility and stuff like that.

3) I dont even know what "Flashing" a device means.

Hello... I don't have a PDF reader on this computer...
1) Look up this in your PDF please... Remove your battery and reset your CMOs memory... this should take you at most 5 mins... "Get'r done." and report back your results.

2) BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and printer.

Before I do this, the CPU fan not spinning has nothing to do with the BIOS not showing up, correct?

Hello... Your using a double negative in your sentence... and communication will not be clear this way...

Once again... Your Fans not turning could be from a lot of reasons... Your display not showing up could be from a lot of reasons.

5 mins are up... Did you complete the your assignment? Remove your battery and reset your CMOs memory?

Before I do this, I want to ask you, if the CPU Fan not spinning, does it have anything to do with the screen not showing up?

Hello... re-word without using the "nothing" and "not" in the same sentence... ( double negative )
5 mins are up... Did you complete the your assignment? Remove your battery and reset your CMOs memory?

Everything has to start, connect and communicate through your MB... any one of a lot of reasons it's not turning on ( display ) and it comes from and thru your MB... that is why it is named "MOTHER" board... It could have been called the "Father" board but like ships, people like to use female names for them. B )

*** Your CPU fan should Start Turning as soon as you hit the case power button. ***

You could have a connector mis-aligned... or a screw shorting out the MB to the case and your PS will not startup because of that...
i'm not there to look over your shoulder... There are a lot of very small electrical connectons and high current connections.

So you need to test all your parts in a Good working computer and Prepare the OLD MB with a CMOS Reset or New program.

Unplug the cpu fan and a case fan and swap connectors, plugging the case fan into cpu_fan header and the cpu fan into the case fans header. If the case fan spins up, and the cpu fan is still not spinning, you have a dead fan. If the cpu fan spins up and case fan doesn't, there is a real problem. It could be anything from the cpu not seated correctly, bent pins on mobo socket, bad header, shorted mobo, psu 24pin not seated properly, 4/8pin eps not seated etc. Best bet in this case would be to breadboard, pull everything out, set mobo on cardboard, install 1x stick of ram, cpu, cpu cooler, cpu cooler fan and the system speaker. Make sure the 2x power connectors from the psu are well and firmly seated. Google the paperclip psu jumper startup. Now see if you get post (1 good beep) and cpu fan should spin up. If it doesn't, pull the bios battery, count to 30,reinstall and try again. If fan still won't spin, bad mobo, bent socket pin or other mobo related problem. Or bad psu or psu connector.

It sucks to start from scratch with bare minimums like breadboarding, but it's the best way to chase down problems that have multiple possible causes

What Karadjgne said, you should make sure the fan is actually able to spin if powerd sufficiently.
You can even power the fan using an old USB cable one that you dont need no more.

Unlike in the video stripping the cables, you can actually stick the metal of the USB cable directly into the fans header pins for power.

If the fan does not react to direct power, its dead, and must be replaced.

If the fan runs on direct power.. you have a problem with your motherboard.

The CPU Fan headet has 4 pins and the Case fan header has 3 pins.. is it still safe to plug it in?

Also, the Case fan plugs in directly to the Power Supply. Not onto the motherboard
