CPU fan not turning?

Hello.

I recently built a new computer and having a few teething problems.

Thermaltake Shark Case.
Asus 8AN Sli Premium motherboard.
AMD Athlon 64 4000+
2 x Gainward bliss Nvidia 7900 GTX
2 gigs of DDR memory
X-power 700Watt PSU
2 x SATA maxtor 200g

Basically I was having trouble getting Sli to work. I eventually did, but when both cards are running after a short time the computer just switches off. Seems to lose power. It could be many things I know, but one of the most compelling reasons atm is the cpu fan. When I booted up tonight, I got a message that the cpu cooler fan was not turning (it was, but slowish) It even seems to be blowing the air onto the heatsink :? There is the nvidia tool AI selector that shows the chasis fan is turning correctly 1318 rpm but the chipset fan (cpu fan?) is set to 0. Although it is turning. Im sure I have connected it properly, wiht the only lead available in the cpu_fan port on the mobo.

Any suggestions? Think this is why my system shuts down during harder progrtams such as games?

Cheers.

chipset fan is the fan on the well.. chipset. THe chipset is the thing thats usually on the center of hte motherboard right behind hte Pci express slots. all boards have a heatsink on it and some even have a fan. If your board doesn't have a chipset fan then it would be spinning at 0rpm. As for CPU fan i think it may be becuase the cpu is not hot enough for it to speed up. Some boards have temp sensors that turn the fan to a higher speed if the temperature reaches a certain level.

As for your pc crashing... try a bios update.. then memtest it. Other than that, im not sure where to begin fixing this one. You could also potentially check to see if your powersupply isn't screwed up. That may involve a bit of cutting and hte use of meters for amperate and voltage. Good luck.

You have connected the CPU Fan in the Chassis Fan connector, and, I guess your chipset fan isn't working.
So, your slowdowns and etcs are due to chipset overheating.
Check again the CPU Fan connection.

I just realised, there is no chip set fan because the Premium has a heat bar going through its length. I checked the cpu fan and it is connected to the cpu fan connecter on the mobo. I think i have the latest bio already. 🙁

I could start checking the psu i guess. Funny thing is I just played 1 hr of counter strike and no problems what so ever. But if i play EVE in sli mode thats when it crashes. I tryed to change anti aliasing in-game on ccs and it crashed then.

First try Memtest. Memory can be a issue. If memory doesnt work, try dropping a video card.. and see if hte pc still crashes. If that doesnt work, swap out hte other and see if it still crashes. If it doesnt it rules out hte video cards.. (unless SLI is hte problem). And go from there. try to pinpoint whats causing the failure. Good luck.
