CPU Fan Positioning

I'm trying to quiet my cpu fan (be quiet shadow rock slim). I installed it with the fan facing up although I've realised that directly above it is the top exhaust fan so with both fans trying to pull in air this may be inefficient. I don't think the cpu fan will fit sideways (I have a zalman z9 case). Would it be better with the fan facing down toward the gpu? Is there some other better arrangement?

No it's better the way you have it now.

Don't point it towards GPU.

BIOS should have some fan control.

But make sure it's still cooling the CPU enough.

Just to check, should the fan be pulling in air or blowing it out?

Well at the moment the fan is closer to the top exhaust than the heatsink. From top to bottom it goes: exhaust fan on top of case; fan on heatsink; heatsink; gpu. The fan is pulling air into the heatsink but the exhaust is pulling air away from the fan at the same time which doesn't seem efficient.

I think the air is being pulled down toward the gpu away from the exhaust which may be the issue
