Greetings,

I'm using a computer I built four, maybe five years ago. It has worked perfectly every day, no problems but occasional Windows problems, until just now: I received a CPU Fan Speed Error on boot. I looked in the case and could see the CPU fan spinning. I turned off the computer, turned it back on, and it booted just fine. Fan is spinning merrily. Should I be worried? I've been processing some video files overnight, which is very CPU-intensive. Is this now unsafe, and is it more likely to be a motherboard or a fan issue?

If it helps, I have an Asus Z390-E Gaming motherboard, Intel Core i9-9900K CPU, and a Noctua NH-D15S CPU cooler. The only thing that has changed in this system since I built it was that I added a hard drive a couple of weeks ago, but that went smoothly and the new drive works fine.

Thanks!

Fan may be late to start at proper rpm, possibly sticky bearing or it gets too low voltage at start. You can try to set it speed curve to start at higher RPM.

Thanks for answering! I'm hoping to avoid taking anything major apart unless it's absolutely necessary, but it probably isn't an issue with the thermal paste. At 100% load, the CPU has been running at 62 C.

I'm now wondering if this is related to the ASUS FanXpert program's latest weirdness: after I installed the new drive, it had me run fan tuning again, and will not believe my fans can run below 40% speed, which is just loud enough to bother my tinnitus. I reset things and had them running at 20% minimum without fan tuning, but maybe that's causing a problem. I've bumped them up to a minimum of 30%, and I'll see in the morning whether the issue repeats itself.

Maybe I'm overreacting, since it only happened once, but the last thing I need is for the CPU fan to conk out on me when it's running unattended.

That and other programs work only while booted to Windows. During start it's all up to BIOS.

Thanks, that's what I thought, but since it's an ASUS program and motherboard I thought I'd check and see if something I didn't know about might be going on.

Maybe I'm overreacting, since it's one error in five-plus years, and everything seems fine since. But sometimes the first error is not the last....

Once in 5 years ? Well that's over reacting for sure.
