CPU fan speeds up for no reason, then slows down again

I built a new gaming PC in July, specs are as follows:

Asus z270e MoBo
i7 7700k
Cryorig H7
16 Gb DDR4 ram
ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080
Corsair 750w PSU
500GB SSD
1TB HDD

My CPU cooler is connected to the 4 pin CPU_FAN header, my chassis fans are connected to the CHA_FAN headers

For some reason my CPU fan is running rather eratically. Every now and then, even when completely idle, the fan will rev up to full speed for literally 1 second and then slow down again. I've checked temps and CPU usage when this happens but nothing changes, the fan just seems to speed up for no reason. For example, I left my PC on overnight, at around 6am, it revved up loud enough to wake me up, then stopped almost instantly.

I calibrated the fans in the BIOS with Q-fan control, set it to PWM and when idle it runs between 300-400 rpm but every so often it will shoot up to 1500-2000 with no apparent reason.

Previously I had the NZXT Kraken x52 installed and had the same issues, but I swapped it out thinking it might have been a fault with the cooler, but the issue still happens with my new air cooler.

Would anyone have any ideas what could be the issue?

Thanks a lot,

Jessica

Solution
When the fan speeds up that generally means the CPU is generating more heat, i.e. more processing. The thermistor could be bad but that would be very rare in my experience. I would look at what processes are running when the CPU starts spinning up. As always check for a BIOS update and besure you have an adequate CPU fan as well as adequate fans for the case. It could be just compensating for surrounding air temperature if their is not adequate case cooling. Remember all of the other components generate heat as well. I know this sounds silly but you could try sticking a wireless meat thermometer inside the case in a strategic location to monitor the case temp..... Just food for thought.

I definitely used enough thermal paste and everything is screwed in properly. I don't think it's a hardware problem. I'll try and update the BIOS and see what happens.

Thanks!
