Hello forum.

I'm looking to buy a CPU that can run lag-free Minecraft Hamachi server. It will be a small server where me and my buddies (5-6) will be hanging out and building.
What would be the best cheap (under $120) option to go for?
I was looking at FX-6300 and i3. But I think the FX-6300 would be better for this due to more cores.
I will also be having 8 GB of memory.

So my question is, do more cores matter? Will it provide less lag? Or is it about the memory?
Please feel free to leave any comments, positive or negative, anything is appreciated.

Yes, and as I said, it's not enough for a server. Your internet connection is the cause of lag, not the computer. Hosting the server does not require much power. A command line Linux server will run on a 10 year old hardware, and easily handle 10+ people. If you strip your workstation down it will easily host the server.

Processing isn't the issue, you can't upload the information to the clients because of the internet connection.

If you are hosting and other people are sharing your connection, it will kill your server as...
Lag will depend on the internet connection more than anything, software runs on the client side. The LAN server requires any dual core processor.

The minimum requirement is a Pentium II for a dedicated server, so you'll be fine with anything. You could probably just run it in a dedicated virtual machine without any issue. I'd just go for the i3 or the lowest power consuming processor you can find.

They recommend a P4 for later Operating systems.

I'd go with the 6 core FX chip and 4 - 8 GB of RAM. Most of this is for the OS though. You could probably use a Server 2008 R2 core and run it command line with fewer resources.

I don't think it's all about the Internet speed, because my friend with a mid-end PC (FX-6100) built a Hamachi server and we could've had about 5-6 players without lags or anything. Now my friend with a crappy laptop built a Hamachi server and if 2 players play at the same time it crashes. Dunno why.

How fast is his UPLOAD speed? 2 Mbps?

You need fast upload speed, it's 100% about the upload on your internet connection.

Exactly, it's limited because ISP's don't like when people host servers. That is cause of your lag, not performance.
