I have a Z87-A MB and a 4670K cpu. I have overclocked it to a reasonable 4.2ghz and all is fine. My question is using CPU-Z I notice that my voltage will fluctuate and throttle down when the cpu is not doing much and that's fine but the MHZ stays locked in at 4,200. Shouldn't that throttle down as well when just sitting idle?

cpuz says core speed 4200 multiplier x42 bus speed 100... never changes even when sitting there but the core voltage drops in idle to about 0.144 volt. I just expected the core clock to dynamically drop when not in use.

ya it just says multiplier x42.0 it does not give a range. even the asus ai suite 3 software shows my voltage and watt dropping way down but still shows cpu at 4200. must just be a glitch as I agree I don't understand how you could hold 4.2 at 10watts.... oh well

I have the same MB and i4670K, had it stable at 4.5 GHz but dropped it to 4.2 GHz. I believe you have to set CPU voltage to Adaptive via BIOS to have it change according load. Mine runs at 0.096 V at 800 MHz on idle and 1.200 V at 4.2 GHz (only when it's needed).

Some run theirs at 1.1 something. But 1.25 is ok at 60C at LOAD, not idle. Look bro, it's impossible to run 4.4Ghz at 0.142 volts. It's definitely throttling down. Try to return all settings at stock and check if CPUz also shows different clock speeds.
