CPU getting hot? FPS issues

Hello~
I've noticed that when I'm playing games (such as Rust on Steam) the FPS will start off at 80-120 but will plummet after just 10 seconds and will stick around until I close out of the game completely and wait a few moments. Then the process repeats. My GPU is at 47c but the fps starts occurring immediately when my CPU his 60 degrees, so I'm assuming this is some sort of safety measure to prevent it from frying itself.

Any suggestions, please?

UPDATE: Typical idle is at 60c too. I'm not very knowledgeable with computers, so I'm wanting more ideas before I pursue anything.

Solution

No what is happening is that your cpu is getting too hot and slowing itself down to protect itself which = lower performance.I suggested the thermal paste because your current thermal paste could've dried up and made bad contact onto your cpu cooler and might be causing high temps. But if you have the stock cooler that came with the cpu it is not really good in cooling so you might want to invest in a aftermarket cpu cooler if replacing the thermal paste doesn't help

What are your GPU and CPU models? Usually a Cpu starts to throttle it's performance to keep itself from overheating at temps of about 90C or above. Also check that your computer isn't clogged with dust as that can help increase temps.

Your cpu has a max tamperature of 61C so it is throttling and affecting your fps, clean dust out of the heatsink if there is any and re seat the heatsink and re apply thermal paste (guides on google for that).

Thanks, I was going to do that but wanted any suggestions before dealing with all of that! How do you think the specs (besides the paste) perform in games? (Rust, World of Warcraft, etc...) Which parts should I consider upgrading?

As stated. 61 is max. Recommended, for a quality lifespan is 55. Many said/say that when the CPU hits 55c it starts to drop off dramatically in performance no matter the frequency. I never understood it. But reading your post made me think of it. I would definitely say it is a heat issue.
Is this with the stock cooler?

Also. You ask for parts. It is a big question. Best way to get an answer is to say in what budget range. =) I went from 2 HD6870´s crossfired to a 7950 and that gave me a serious boost.

Yes, I ordered this on NewEgg a while ago actually,

haven't changed any parts, everything in DXDIAG is accurate. Whenever it hits 60C it drops fps to 30 max. Anyone know about anything in the BIOS that I could check? Open to any and all suggestions at this point.

I have a 6850 myself and it works really well in medium-high settings in most games and a 8120 is a good cpu (almost equivalent to my i5 2400) but you should upgrade the gpu as it would be outdated in like 2 years imo. you should get a 7850/7950 or 670.

I would go for a CPU cooler first and foremost. Those temps, on stock is not very good. Like lobaman said. Clean out the rig and re apply thermalpaste. See if it helps. It should only be a little drop in the center of the CPU. Many put on too much and this actually makes it perform worse.
