Hello people, So i want to ask to day is it worth upgrading my Amd fx6100 to something like a i5 or i7 for gaming. Or just keep my Amd fx and buy a after market cooler and overclock.
 
what are you current specs and budget?

if youre going to spend $300+ upgrading i would put it towards a better graphics card. For gaming it would probably have a more noticeable difference.
the fx-6100 is decent and you can always overclock it.
 


Hey, Yeah i have a amd fx 6100 3.9ghz and a gtx 66o sc. Im not 100% sure if its bottle necking but for games like Planetside 2 im not getting the best of frames. That's why i was wondering if its worth saving up for a i5 or i7.
 


If was to overclock it would i see any more fps ?
 
amd 8320/8350 is probably the best AMD has to offer. they are good cpus but for gaming i5's are usually considered the best. for just gaming, people dont usually get the i7's because they provide little benefit for a lot more money.

if youre not satisfied with your 6100 and are on a tight budget you may want to consider getting the 8350 since you already have an am3+ board
 


Would i notice alot more if i was to buy an i5 ?
 


get the fx6300 or fx8350 its worth the upgrade
 


on paper the i5 will score higher than the 8350 in most games. but in real life i would say the difference is minimal. If you check the feedback on newegg and amazon from owners of the fx 8350 most of it is positive.
 


But still, doesn't the i5 2500k beat fx6300+8350

yes intel is faster on paper but the thing is you can still get a solid 60 fps with the 6300 or fx8350. and then some. there very strong for gaming intel is just overkill. i would upgrade that 6100 to a 6300 because there is ALOT of improvement you will sse in fps. skyrim, call of duty, ALL latest games out there have a 15-30% increase in performance with the new fx piledriver. waste of money to switch over to intel i have a 8350 and over the 8150 again atleast a 20% difference in gaming. just because a solo benchmark of single thread only shows 7% increase over the 8150 compared to the 8350 doesnt mean it ends there. theres alot of other things like floating point, cache, and other calculations that are drastically improved with the new piledriver architecture that relates to gaming
 
I'm still newbie here,, but I've just read this and that,,
I think it's all depend on your budget, if budget isn't your concern at all, you could build all new rig.
From what I read, core i5/i7 would out perform any AMD, but since you have AM3+ motherboard, then to save money I think I agree with diablo24life you could pick 6300 or fx8350, and you could OC it,, if you could do this http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/57615-amd-vishera-fx-6300-fx-4300-review-17.html it's must be great :lol:
 
Depends on how much you want to spend for that one game. I have both an FX 8120@ 4.4 ghz and an i5 3570k@4ghz. Planetside and any ONLINE game will demand lots from it.

That being said. There is a noticeable difference in playing frames between my two systems. But nothing worth spending any money on IMO.

If you do want to upgrade platforms. Wait until Haswell comes out in a couple of months. For now, overclock you CPU and see what that brings. Cheers.
 


Ah yes, that's must be a great choice but does it means if steamroller comes out you will be bought that and throw the 6300 out?
