Hi there,

So recently I bought a new PC and decided to open it up and clean it as there was quite a lot of dust. I also replaced thermal paste for as it seemed quite dry down there. After setting everything up, I turned on the PC. Everything seemed to be fine but at the windows loading screen, the computer just shut down by itself. So I turned it back on again, entered the BIOS, I noticed that the CPU temperature was around 80-82C. Wow. Previously, it was working just fine with the temperature of around 35-40 while idle. All of the fans seem to be working, all the cables are connected- can anyone help me figure out what could be causing this?

My specs:
MOBO- Asus Rampage 3
CPU- Intel i7-950 3.07 GHZ
RAM- 24 GB (6x4) 2033MHZ (corsair? Unsure)
Graphics- Nvidia Quadro fx 580
PSU- Pentium p4 MODEL-PC-550AUBA-M

I don't have any aftermarket coolers, nor any of the parts have been overclocked. I will appreciate any help given.

Solution
After checking the thermal paste application, I would also try and reseat the processor. It is completely possible that it isn't getting a proper connection. What heatsink is currently on the CPU?

I encountered similar issues when thermal paste was not correctly spread (and eventually the old not cleaned well). Also I know that to much or to little thermal paste is not ok.

Well I used Cooler Master E1 C Essential alongside with the little plastic stick that came with it. There was also a wipe which I assume contains alcohol and other substances, so I just mildly wiped it over.

I will try to do it again once I have time although I don't think I overused it.

Yeah, you were right, there wasn't a proper connection between the two. The processor was barely touched by the thernal paste. Thanks again.
