I am working on a university-backed project for Autonomous Driving Research and am currently sizing our test rig which will go inside our vehicle. We are looking at dual 1080 Ti's and one i9-7980XE, however, the i9-7980XE is greatly limiting our options in terms of motherboards/chipsets. Are there any similar alternatives to the i9-7980XE?
The new Xeon Scalable CPUs are intersting, in that they use the same socket for the entire lineup -- https://ark.intel.com/products/series/125191/Intel-Xeon-Scalable-Processors You can start with a lower end CPU and scale up as needed without having to change the motherboard. The middle range and above CPUs also are six channel memory controllers so they have more memory bandwidth.
